Counselor's Corner

Hi, my name is Glenda Henman and I am so happy to be back at Kiva for a second year as your Counselor. I believe social and emotional wellness is the foundation for a child's ability to learn in school. If children become self-regulated and can manage their own emotions and interactions, they will succeed in school, work and relationships. I also believe in the importance of identifying and building on existing strengths and resilience in children, in their families and communities. All of this allows for an increase in a child's ability to function in the classroom, improve academic performance, have better peer relationships and improved classroom behavior. My approach to working with children, families and communities is through a relationship based and trauma-informed lens.

I have a BA in Psychology and a MA in Counseling and Guidance and am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I completed post graduate training from the Harris Institute in Infant/Toddler Mental Health and hold Endorsement® as an Infant Family Specialist. I have also completed Phase 1 training in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics® and am a trainer in the Neurosequential Model in Education®.  I have worked in the Mental Health field for over 20 years and previously worked for a local Head Start Birth to Five program, a local domestic violence shelter, and various community behavioral health agencies.

Please know, I am not just here for the children, but for all of you. Feel free to email me at ghenman@susd.org anytime and/or fill out the Counselor Referral Form. I look forward to continuing to support the needs of students and families of Kiva.
