How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: Where to begin... SUSD had a huge impact on my career and personal choices. From my early days at ANLC, they worked with me patiently as I learned English. They provided a safe and creative school where I found the love for learning. The teachers knew me by my nickname and knew my siblings and parents. A teacher/coach gifted me my first computer, after discovering I spent hours at the public library doing assignments. At Arcadia High School, I continued my passion for learning and excelling academically. With an informative EVIT fair I attended, the rest of my career was shaped. I attended EVIT nursing assistant program while completing my high school credits at Arcadia. I became a nurse assistant after my junior year and graduated from Arcadia in 2005. Since graduating I became a registered nurse, obtained my BSN from ASU, and soon will complete my master’s and become a PMHNP. ANLC and Arcadia High School education, faculty, staff, and peers prepared me to succeed in my journey.

How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: In addition to many great teachers, I had several mentors and role models who helped me make the most of my high school years and prepare me for college and beyond. I played on the Freshman, JV and Varsity Tennis teams, Freshman Badminton team and was on the pom line my Junior year and Senior year when we came in 3rd place at Nationals. The opportunity to participate on these teams helped me learn the importance of teamwork and putting in the time and hard work to achieve results which set me up for a successful career on Wall Street and now in the Behavioral Health field. I spent a summer in Gap, France through the NACEL program which is where I gained my passion for international travel and learned a lot about different cultures from my host family. I was also very fortunate to have a guidance counselor who was a friend of the family and motivated me to be my best self, be respectful and to make my mom proud.

How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: The Scottsdale public schools–all the friends I made there and my teachers–are forever a part of who I am. There were so many teachers who made me believe I could do anything: Chris Marsh, Greg Basila, Ken Van Buren, Renate Mousseux for French class, my counselor Ann Evans (who helped with my favorite club All-Stars!), and more. I now live in London after a decade in New York City and my job in travel and media has taken me around the world. I've held various roles at National Geographic, including as their first and only Urban Insider, Luxury Editor, and now writing NatGeo's Hotels of a Lifetime book. I've been an editor for other travel media and recently started a Europe trips company with a friend. I was taught to see the world with curiosity and empathy, that books could take us far away, that anything was possible. Childhood is short, but if we are very lucky (and I was), what we learned and who we met are with us forever.

How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: I feel so grateful to have had the opportunity to have grown up with SUSD. I do believe the education I received and the friends I have made through SUSD has really shaped my life and prepared me for things to come. I also feel the architecture of the schools and thoughtful planning of the campuses at the time made a significant impact on me. I went on to pursue a degree in architecture inspired by the center breezeway of Hopi Elementary, the windows at Ingleside and radial patterned design of Arcadia High. My degree was in Landscape Architecture and now I design mostly single family exteriors; entry courtyard, pools, patios, walls, planting and lighting for private clients in the neighborhoods that feed SUSD schools. My Kids both went through the SUSD system as well. My son is finishing up his first year at ASU studying architecture and my daughter is finishing up at Arcadia High School this year.

How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: Throughout my K-12 education with SUSD, my teachers, parents, and my support system provided me with a safe, effective, and engaging learning environment where I could learn, grow, and thrive as a person and student. SUSD staff and teachers provided the instruction and support that allowed me to succeed at my full potential. With that foundation I went on to Arizona State University for my undergraduate degree and the University of Arizona School of Law for my juris doctorate. I look back fondly on my years living, growing and learning in SUSD. I wouldn't be the person I am today without my time, experience, and success in SUSD.

How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: I attended SUSD schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. I look back fondly on the incredible educational experience. Every step of the way, the teachers and administrators guided me. Principals Flemming and Polk at Navajo led by example. Mrs. Caskey at Scottsdale High knew every student by name and greeted us warmly. Principal Hendricks welcomed all of us from Scottsdale High who inundated Saguaro after Scottsdale Hight closed. I had so many opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, from track and filed at Navajo, student government, high school wrestling and football, and the Saguaro Ski Club. But the teachers made the biggest impact. Mr. Stewart and Mr. Dant taught me how to write, which allowed me to succeed in college, law school, and as a lawyer. Guidance counselors Paluch and Mueller were amazingly helpful in selecting a college. Nancy Walker, Bill Jenkins and Lois Fitch taught me leadership skills in student government. Thank you SUSD.

How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: Being able to attend SUSD K-Senior year gave me a sense of community and friends I still have today. At Scottsdale High staff knew all the kids names and you would recognize a fellow Beaver years after the school closed. Moving on to Saguaro, into a new neighborhood school of Scottsdale expanded my circle of life ling friendships...even meeting my husband of 34 years. (We raised 4 kids going to Aztec then Mountainside Middle School. ) I became very active in SUSD first in PTO as President at Aztec and Mountainside and served on both Site Councils. I was on Parent Council Board and served on Calendar and Budget committes at District. These experiences led me to serve in many other leadership roles in this city, National Charity League and Scottsdale Leadership are just two of them. I worked for 10 years as a Program and Volunteer Director with HappilyEver After League started right here in Scottsdale. I have owned Pictures in Pixels Photography for the last 15 years.

How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: I often think of how Ms. Sardinia in 4th grade laid the foundation for how to outline a text and organize my writing. I rely on these basic foundations every day when drafting and reviewing legislation. Ms. Elmore in 5th/6th grade gave me the confidence to learn independently and the life skills of initiative, perseverance, and lifelong learning. Ms. Kaufman in 8th grade saw my potential and made a point to invest me not just as a student but as a student leader and lead me to attend Chaparral which further solidified my academic background and enabled me to attend the University of AZ on a full academic scholarship.

My freshman year started out Stonegate rough and the caring admistration and teachers helped my parents and I drop one of the classes that I was struggling in and put me in Art 1 class with Mrs. Joy (Marilyn Joy Kolesar) in the middle of the year. My life immediately changed the the better. Marilyn was such a positive, fun, motivating, down to earth teacher that kept me engaged and interested. I stayed in art classes throughout all of highschool and received scholarships through Art for college. I actually graduated college with a minor in Studio Arts because my love of creating and expressing myself through art was nurtured and encouraged in highschool. Not only did Art class at Chaparral Highschool give me skills and technique needed to be an artist; it also gave me confidence, the ability to accept myself for who I am and so many wonderful memories and friends!

After Cheyenne, I attended Desert Mountain High School, where I was exposed to eye opening experiences. I continued to work hard, and managed school, varsity tennis, a part-time job, and a social life. I decided to attend NAU because I wanted a change of scenery and climate, different culture, and size. I earned dual enrollment credit in high school and accredit it to SUSD because I am graduating a year early. Upon graduation in May, I will ship out to Basic Training as I have joined the U.S. Army in hopes of becoming an officer.

I spent three years at Chaparral and graduated at the age of 16. Throughout my own schooling, I faced many challenges due to being dyslexic and dysgraphic. These learning differences made it necessary for me to be identified as a student with special education needs early on at Sequoya. Thankfully, my teachers and the support staff put in tremendous effort to establish a strong foundation for my growth and development. Today, I am dedicated to ensuring that every student has equal opportunities to learn and never experiences any feelings of embarrassment. My goal is to create a positive and inclusive learning environment where all children feel respected and accepted. By building positive relationships with my students, I hope to serve as a role model to inspire and guide them.

I also has great math and science teachers that created a desire for me to pursue a science profession once competetive athletes was complete. How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: The friendships and teachers that encouraged me and supported me along the way really helped. I took a journalism class junior year in high school, and I really enjoyed it, became a pretty good writer. I went on to get a Broadcast Journalism degree at ASU and worked for various newspapers. I eventually went back to school for my MAED to be a teacher here at SUSD. My mother taught for many years in SUSD in fact, she opened up Anasazi and taught fifth grade just like me! She is 91 and still an advocate for kids! She inspired me to go into education.

How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: I had teachers that provided strong guidance, yet freedom to express my interests while making sure that I had the basic skill sets to succeed in the math and science courses that were core to a technical degree. Additionally my teachers fostered a believe that I could do anything I set my mind to, even in those areas outside my focus areas. During the course of my career I found that my job took my in directions where it was my ability to look at a problem openly and solve it logically was of more benefit than the actual hard math at the core of my learning. I credit several of my high school teachers specifically for encouraging that out of the box logical thinking that proved so vitally important I’m throughout my career.

After high school I went to college, but after an AA degree school was not where my head was at. Got a job as an apprentice machinist, and after several years decided to go back to school while working three jobs. Two years later I graduated with a dual degree in engineering and education. Went to work in the aerospace industry and earned a Masters in Aviation Safety.

Everyone respected the rules and expectations that were set forth from our administration. That foundation helped me get through Mohave and Saguaro with a breeze. A couple more things I learned from middle high school was accountability, self-reliance, and being an all-around person of example. I can proudly say I never engaged in a fight in my days as an SUSD student!

A Kiva teacher's family provided babysitting for me and my sister, and learned some extra things while they did. I kept in touch will all my Kiva teachers while they remained there through my high school years. I remain in touch with my high school teachers as I have provided support for them in and out of the classroom. One in particular catalyzed my whole career: Richard Peterson, retired Chaparral honors/AP chemistry teacher. The first groups of students I tutored were from his class while I too was a student. 15 years later I am doing the same thing and loving it. How did the Scottsdale Unified School District preapre you for success?: I believe attending Cocopah and Chaparral shaped me into the successful and motivated person I am today. I will never forget my Cocopah Drama teacher, Jan Howard, basically yelling at us, "TAKE RISKS! Who cares what others think of you, just be brave to take a risk!" At Chaparral, I was a part of the "All Stars" peer leadership/service group all four years, became a Thespian, starred in a few musicals, and was the Captain of the Pom Line my Senior Year. I had the best experiences at Chaparral because I took risks every chance I could. I became a school teacher for 10 years (5 years in SUSD!) and decided to open my own after school company, Art and Sol. This is Art and Sol's 20th Anniversary, and I have shared and taught the performing arts to over 5000 students! I get to teach children K-10th grades to take risks on and off stage, to be confident in life, and to do what makes their hearts sing. The clubs on campus kept us engaged with one another on a social level as well as showed us the impact we can have on our community, both on campus and off. I really enjoyed my education at SUSD and all the experiences I had.
