Sex Ed/HGD Advisory Committee

Purpose

The purpose of the Sex Ed Advisory Committee is to review, evaluate, and recommend quality and appropriate instructional resources for approval by the District Governing Board, in keeping with A.R.S. 15-711. 

(Note: Parental "opt in" required for student participation in Sex Ed/HGD lessons.)

  • Materials received from vendors will be open to the public for 60 days prior to final Board approval and opportunities for written comment will be provided. Two public hearings will be held during this adoption.

Objectives

The committee will:

  • Learn about Arizona legislation that establishes processes and guidelines schools must adhere to if adopting Human Growth and Development/Sex Education materials.  
  • Discuss/identify criteria to be used to evaluate resources – beyond legislated criteria.
  • Review, evaluate, and discuss resources submitted by vendors.  
  • Review feedback submitted by teachers and parents (not serving on the committee).
  • Recommend resources to the Governing Board for formal approval and adoption.

Requirements

Applicants must be able to meet the following commitments:

* Specific times for vendor presentations may be added during the school day.  If so, classroom teachers or nurses will be provided with a substitute.

  1. Review committee agenda, articles, and other materials that may be assigned prior to meetings in preparation of meeting discussions. 
  2. Adhere to the norms established for the committee work.
  3. Be willing to participate as an unpaid volunteer.
  4. Eligible certified employees may receive horizontal move hours for committee meetings occurring after the school day.
  5. Attend and actively participate in all meetings from February – May 2024.  All meetings will be at the Mohave District Annex (MDA). Meeting dates and times are:
    • February 14, 2024 | 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.
    • March 6, 2024 | 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.        
    • March 27, 2024 | 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.
    • April 17, 2024 | 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.        
    • May 8, 2024 | 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.  
    • *Additional meeting -- June 10, 2024 | 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.     
  6. Follow state law including open meeting law as it pertains to committee work.
  7. Disclose any potential conflicts of interest.

The application is designed to assist with selecting the most qualified people to support a diverse representation of teachers, administrators, parents, etc. from all SUSD learning communities. The Human Growth and Development/Sex Ed Committee application will close at 12:00 noon on Friday, January 12, 2024.  All applicants will be notified of potential selection prior to the January 30, 2024, Board meeting.

Public Review of Materials: 
The SUSD Sex Ed Proposed Course of Study and recommended instructional materials to support the Course of Study can be reviewed at the Mohave District Annex from August 15 – October 15 from 9 AM to 3 PM on SUSD school days.   Extended hours are available upon request with advanced notice.   To schedule a time to review outside of hours indicated, please contact Christina Diaz at cdiaz@susd.org.
