Blue Zones Schools
A Blue Zones School is a school that adopts principles from the Blue Zones Project, a global well-being initiative based on regions of the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives — known as “Blue Zones.”
These schools focus on creating environments that naturally encourage healthier choices and happier lives for students, staff, and families. The goal is to improve physical health, mental well-being, and a sense of community through sustainable habits and environments.
Inspired by the research of National Geographic Fellow and New York Times best-selling author Dan Buettner, the innovative Blue Zones partnership aims to make healthy choices easier for Scottsdale residents, leading to their living longer, happier lives. The local Blue Zones initiative is sponsored by HonorHealth®, The Cigna Group, and Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona.
Being “Blue Zones-approved” means that the schools have successfully incorporated specific health and well-being initiatives into their school culture and environment.

The Scottsdale Unified School District has announced that Yavapai Elementary School has been recognized as a Blue Zones Project approved school, joining several other district campuses in earning the designation.
The recognition reflects the district’s continued focus on student health and wellness, according to a press release.

(September 11, 2025) – The Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is celebrating five more official school locations as Scottsdale Blue Zones Project® approved, underscoring our commitment to student wellness! Coronado High School is the first SUSD High School to receive the health and wellness title. Additionally, Mountainside Middle School, Hopi Elementary School, Redfield Elementary School and Cochise Elementary now join the ranks of several other SUSD elementary and middle schools to hold this important title.
