Event: Turning Distress into Success
Schools, parents, and law enforcement officials continue to struggle to find the balance between digital
wellness and digitally-led schools and classrooms. By age 9, most American students have a smartphone or an
electronic device. Students, in general, have received very little digital citizenship training, if any, and they often
make mistakes online that are behavioral, egregious, and developmentally typical. This can lead to depression,
self-harm, and ideation of suicide.
More and more students are leading a sedentary lifestyle with untethered access and device use and while the
longitudinal data is not yet available, it is obvious from current health and wellness data, our school and family
communities need assistance navigating the uncharted waters of digital citizenship.
