Scottsdale Unified School District and Cheyenne Traditional School maintain student safety as a primary focus. Throughout the school year students, faculty and staff practice safety protocols such as fire drills, bus evacuation drills and lockdown drills. On Friday, February 22nd, 2019, Cheyenne students and staff will be participating in an Off-Site Evacuation and Parent/Student Reunification Drill, to practice how to safely evacuate campus, travel to an off-site location, and reunite parents with their students. During this drill, Cheyenne is proudly partnering with Desert Mountain High School, SUSD District leadership, SUSD Transportation Department, and Scottsdale Police Department. All students are encouraged to participate in this evacuation exercise.
The Off-Site Evacuation Drill will begin at approximately 8:00am. The Cheyenne safety team and the Scottsdale police officers will begin the orderly campus evacuation. SUSD school busses will transport students to Desert Mountain High School where they will be supervised by Cheyenne staff while the Parent/Student Reunification Drill is taking place. The school busses will then return all to Cheyenne’s campus between 11:00am-12:00pm.0

Cheyenne will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on February 5th 2019. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
Not all of Cheyenne's 4th grade students will take the test. The students who have been randomly selected will receive a letter on approx. February 15th.

In accordance with Arizona Administrative Code R7-2-303 and SUSD school board policy, Cheyenne Traditional School offers Human Growth and Development Education in grades five through eight. On Friday, March 8th, 2019, Cheyenne fifth grade students will be given a gender and age appropriate presentation titled The Always Changing® and Growing Up.
The Always Changing® and Growing Up Program helps both boys and girls:
- Understand the physical and emotional changes they experience during puberty, and acknowledge these changes as a normal part of growth and development.
- Learn the physiology of their bodies and correct terminology for parts of the reproductive system.
- Understand that personal hygiene is each individual’s responsibility.
The presentation consists of an age appropriate film and a short discussion that focuses on puberty with the physical and emotional changes that occur during this time of age. There will also be discussion of hygiene, skin care, nutritional needs, and encouragement of a positive body image.
Boys and girls will attend separate sessions. Mr. Akhbari, Cheyenne’s Assistant Principal will present the Growth and Development unit for fifth grade boys. Nurse Amy will present the Growth and Development unit for fifth grade girls.
