First Generation Students
First Generation 8/24/18
A first-generation college student is defined as a student whose parents, step-parents or legal guardian have not completed a bachelor's degree. This means that you are the first in your family to attend a four-year college or /university to attain a bachelor's degree. If your parents, step-parents, or guardians attended college for a couple of years but never received a degree, you are still considered first generation. If you older sibling(s) attend or graduated from college, YOU are still considered a first generation student, just like they were.
There’s a lot of assistance available for first generation students. Almost all colleges and universities have special programs or scholarships to help first gen students. Here are a list of some great resources for first gens.
