Patti Beckman Speech for Pima Dedication Ceremony 2019
Thank you, Principal Cruz- Freeman and the Pima community for giving me the opportunity to say a few words on this wonderful occasion.
It is not every day that you are a part of something as profound as the dedication of a school. In fact, it only happens in communities like ours, about every 50 years.
It is fitting that we should be here on Valentines Day. For it is the love for our children, and the hope for their future, that has pulled the Pima community together to design and build a school that will last for generations.
We are here for a dedication. Let’s think about the word dedication for a minute. Merriam Webster defines it in a couple of ways and certainly the most appropriate definition for today would seem to be:
“A ceremony to mark the official completion or the opening of something (such as a building)”
But I like the following definition, for I feel it most defines the real reason why we are here this morning:
“Dedication: self-sacrificing devotion and loyalty”
For when I think of the Pima parents, past and current, that have devoted themselves tirelessly to support this school- by volunteering in the classroom, buying supplies, fundraising, essentially doing everything that connects families and makes Pima the center of the community- I think of dedication.
When I witness the self-sacrificing, experienced, caring Pima teachers and administrators making significant efforts to get to know every child, so they can help them reach their academic potential and at the same time, feel safe and cared for- Again, I think of dedication.
Finally, when I watch the Pima children learn, grow and make memories inside a school where they are challenged and loved, while always striving to give their personal best- I think of our student’s dedication.
Congratulations on your beautiful school.
I applaud all of you that have made Pima so much more than a building. All of you that are devoted to making Pima a school that is not only known for academic excellence, but also for the dedicated community it resides in.
