Desert Canyon Extracurricular Programs
One exciting new venture at DCES this year has been building three raised beds outside the 3rd grade cove and starting an after-school garden club. 17 third- fifth grade students signed up in the fall and planted our inaugural garden. They planted beets, kale, onions, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, kohlrabi (what’s that?!), and many herbs such as rosemary, mint, and thyme. They had modest success as they tried to figure out which critters were eating the tender plants and how to get the drip irrigation just right. Gardening in the desert is a challenging, but rewarding endeavor. The spring gardening group were able to harvest kale and carrots, enough to share and eat!
The spring group has planted cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, and zucchini. Many flowers have been planted as well to brighten the area and attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds.
Next year the garden club may add a pollinator garden around the side of the garden on the north wall. This would be a wonderful way to help monarch butterflies have enough to eat along their long migration to Mexico. Their primary food is milkweed, which has become more and more scarce.
The garden will continue to evolve and will be a wonderful outdoor classroom for the students at DCES!
