August 2017

Dear Scottsdale Unified School District Family,

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year, everyone!  If you are new to the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD), we thank you for choosing us for the education of your students!  You will not be disappointed.  If your students are returning to us again this year, thank you for your ongoing commitment.  We are humbled by your decision and look forward to continuing to oversee their learning.

As we kick off the new school year, we want to thank you for attending last week’s Meet the Teachers Nights at our 29 schools.  I don’t know who was more excited to meet each other:  the students or the teachers!  What I do know, however, is that everyone is looking forward to another great school year in SUSD.  Teachers have their lesson plans prepared and are armed with new laptop computers to enhance instruction of your students.  Each of our principals has put together an outstanding staff.  Now it’s time to educate.

As you may have seen written on the new SUSD website or have heard a Governing Board member or me say, the mission of SUSD is to ensure that all individual learners reach their full potential.  We are committed to this endeavor.  More than ever before, we are student-focused.  Everything we do is with this mission in mind.  I encourage you to attend the Governing Board’s monthly meetings to see this undertaking in action.  If you are unable to be there in person, all monthly meetings – and soon, all study sessions – can be viewed live or afterward on YouTube.

We rely on your support to prepare your students for their future.  We want you to be involved, both at the district level and at your school.  Join your school’s parent-teacher organization.  Volunteer in the classroom.  Think of a way your employer or business can support a school.  Make sure homework gets done, tests get studied for, practices are arrived to on time and clubs are joined.  Chaperone a field trip.  Support our community supporters, the Scottsdale Charros and the SUSD Foundation.

We have more than 80 National Board Certified teachers.  We had more Flinn Scholars last year than any other school district in Arizona.  We have high school theater students performing this week in Scotland.  We have nine A+ schools, and award-winning robotics and athletics teams.  If we work together, there is no stopping what your students can accomplish.

Have a great school year!
