Outgoing SUSD Board Leaves Superintendent Decision to New Board
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Dec. 20, 2018) The Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) Governing Board gaveled closed its last scheduled meeting of 2018 today, deferring the hiring of the district’s next Superintendent to the new Governing Board that will take office next month. Patty Beckman and Jann-Michael Greenburg were elected to the SUSD Board last month. They succeed Vice President Kim Hartmann and Board Member Pam Kirby, who did not seek re-election. Board members Allyson Beckham, Sandy Kravetz and Board President Barbara Perleberg return next year.
The Governing Board reviewed, in executive session, the confidential applications of six candidates elicited from the process of search firm McPherson & Jacobson LLC of Omaha, Neb. Twenty-four educators submitted applications for the post.
Before adjourning, Governing Board President Barbara Perleberg announced that the Board consulted with Acting Superintendent Dr. John Kriekard today to discuss the possibility of extending his contract, which is set to expire on June 30, 2019. Kriekard was named Acting Superintendent in May 2018, under a four-month contract that was extended in August through June of next year.
“The Superintendent search did not meet our expectations,” stated Perleberg. “We are fortunate to have an Acting Superintendent in Dr. Kriekard, providing stability to this district.”
“I am committed to the students, families and employees of SUSD,” said Kriekard. “This community has been so supportive, and I look forward to the exciting future we’ll share throughout the rest of this school year.”
The Governing Board Board undertook the search for a new superintendent in April, following the dismissal of Dr. Denise Birdwell.
