August Superintendent's Letter
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year, Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) Parents and Guardians,
We hope you and your families enjoyed your time together this summer and are as excited about the new school year as we are! We anticipate it will be another exciting, productive and memorable one for SUSD students, teachers and staff.
Over the summer, many of our teachers became students themselves in a variety of district-offered and outside professional development programs, so they can bring new, exceptional learning opportunities to your children in their classrooms.
We also start the new school year with some exciting, new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) resources: new math textbooks for all grade levels and 7,560 new Chromebook laptop computers for grades 3 – 12 that will enable teachers to leverage digital resources to deliver the new state science standards.
All of this, as well as the initiatives we work on year-round, are aimed at bringing rigor to our classrooms and relevance to the real-world, all the while ensuring that our relationships – with staff, with parents and with our community – are positive, transparent and meaningful.
In that spirit, I will host a series of meetings in each of our five learning communities throughout the school year, starting Aug. 28 at Saguaro High School, to hear from you, your neighbors and anyone else who has a stake in the work of SUSD. Called “Coffee with Kriekard,” this is my opportunity to hear from you.
Likewise, I look forward to meeting you and telling you about the many great things that are going on in SUSD! I will be at Arcadia High School on Oct. 23, Coronado High School on Dec. 18, Desert Mountain High School on Feb. 26, 2020, and Chaparral High School on April 22, 2020. You do not have to reside in those learning communities to attend, but each meeting will be geared, at least partially, toward the schools that are a part of those communities. If you are not sure which is your learning community, go to susd.org/map. To see the complete meeting schedule, click here and visit susd.org/Superintendent.
At SUSD, our goal is to create and enhance a culture of learning. We achieve that by being partners with you. I invite you to attend the Governing Board’s monthly meetings on the first and third Tuesdays. I encourage you to join your school’s parent organization and actively take part in the life of your school. Together, we will build on SUSD’s 123-year legacy and secure its future for many more years to come.
Dr. John Kriekard
