Scottsdale Unified School District welcomes back Dr. John Kriekard to the SUSD family, in the role of Acting Superintendent. Dr. Kriekard has 40 years of combined experience as both an educator and administrator. He has spent more than half of his career (23 years) serving Scottsdale in roles ranging from Assistant Principal to Assistant Superintendent, but most notably, as a Principal in three of our five learning communities.
He went on to successfully lead the Paradise Valley Unified School District as Superintendent and now returns to Scottsdale with a student-focused vision and a collaborative spirit.
Dr. Kriekard is the recipient of the All Arizona Superintendent of the Year Award, as well as the Bob Grossman Leadership in School Communications Award. He earned his doctorate from Arizona State University and his master’s from Western Michigan University.
Dr. Steve Chestnut was an educator in the State of Washington for many years. He was a high school teacher and coach, a middle school principal, and a superintendent. For the past six years he served as the superintendent of the Maricopa Unified School District, in Maricopa, Arizona. Dr. Chestnut was an adjunct professor of education at two universities in Washington, and has worked as an adjunct professor for Grand Canyon University. He has a master's degree in education from Central Washington University, and a master’s degree in business administration from City University of Seattle. He completed a doctoral degree in educational leadership at Seattle University.

An educator for 40 years, Dr. Steve Nance began his career spending several years as an elementary classroom teacher in Iowa. He has been an elementary school principal in both Iowa and Arizona, including 15 years in Scottsdale as principal at both Sequoya and Pima Elementary Schools. While at Pima, Dr. Nance was named by the Wallace Foundation as a member of their Circle of Honor, recognizing the top 1% of principals in Arizona. When Arizona began labeling schools, Pima became the first Excelling Title I school in the state. Dr. Nance also served as assistant superintendent in two other Arizona districts before returning to Scottsdale in 2016. He holds a BA and MA from the University of Northern Iowa and a Ph.D. from Iowa State University.

Dr. Cecilia Johnson brings to Scottsdale Unified School District over 20 years of experience in educational leadership. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana State University and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Purdue University. Dr. Johnson’s career includes secondary art teacher, high school administrator, elementary principal, director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, and superintendent of schools. Most recently, Dr. Johnson worked as an Associate Superintendent for the Arizona Dept of Education. During her tenure, she served on several national councils and boards, providing her expertise nationally to shape education policy and practice.

Doug Virgil recently retired after serving over 20 years as the Assistant Superintendent for Business Services at Alhambra School District in Phoenix. He has a bachelor’s degree in business from Cameron University, Lawton OK, and master’s degree in business from Webster University, St. Louis MO. He completed a doctoral degree in education administration and supervision at Arizona State University. Prior to Alhambra he was the school district business manager for Miami Unified School District in Miami, AZ, for over three years. He has been an adjunct professor teaching public school finance at Arizona State University and Argosy University, and taught math and economics for Eastern Arizona College, Gila-Pueblo Campus. Before Doug entered into the field of public school finance he served in the U.S. Marine Corps and as an infantry officer in the U. S. Army.
