Technology and Networking Resource Protocols
(Applies to District-Owned and Personal Devices)
When enrolling in Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD), students and parents/guardians agree to follow the Uniform Code of Student Conduct, including all technology use expectations.
Students in grades K–12 are issued:
- An SUSD email account
- A district-issued laptop and charger
- The district-issued laptop is required for classroom instruction and testing
- SUSD does not support Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
All district-issued and personal devices used on campus are subject to these protocols.
Scope of Protocols
These protocols apply to:
- All district-issued technology and network resources
- All computers located within SUSD
- All personal electronic devices brought to campus (including but not limited to cell phones, laptops, tablets, smart watches, eReaders, drones, VR equipment, gaming devices, smart glasses, etc.)
- All access to SUSD network resources
Student Responsibilities
A. Personal Responsibility
Students must:
- Use technology and network resources for educational purposes only
- Report misuse of district technology or network resources
- Accept responsibility for devices issued to them
- Understand that SUSD is not responsible for loss, damage, or expenses related to personal devices
- Comply with SUSD Artificial Intelligence Guidelines
Misuse includes but is not limited to:
- Pornographic, violent, illegal, abusive, or discriminatory content
- Racism, sexism, harassment, cyberbullying
- Unethical or illegal behavior
B. Acceptable & Responsible Use
Students will:
- Use district devices only for school-appropriate purposes
- Follow all copyright and trademark laws
- Work only with materials they created or have permission to use
- Keep logins, passwords, and personal information confidential
- SUSD recommends changing passwords at a minimum, annually
- Password reset link: https://pwreset.susd.org/
- Access the internet on campus only through SUSD Secure Wi-Fi
- Report misuse to a teacher or administrator
Students will not:
- Not attempt to access, modify, or delete accounts or unauthorized files
- Not attempt to bypass content filtering (including proxy sites/software)
- Not upload or create viruses
- Not damage, modify, or personalize district devices (including applying stickers to devices)
- Not use devices for gaming, credit card purchases, or earning money
- Not disrupt network access for others
- Not share home addresses, phone numbers, or personally identifiable information (PII) or data without authorization
Students should remember:
Electronic communication is not private, and digital footprints are permanent.
Personal Electronic Devices on Campus
SUSD provides necessary instructional technology. Students are prohibited from using a personal laptop for learning.
If brought to campus:
Respectful Use
- Devices must be off and stored unless permitted by a teacher or administrator.
- When permitted, devices must be on silent mode.
- Media, messaging, and apps must be course-related.
- Students may not use another person’s device without permission.
- Photos, videos, or recordings of others require prior approval from the individuals involved and a teacher/administrator.
Responsible Use
- Students are responsible for storing, carrying, and charging devices.
- Students are responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged property.
- Harassment, cheating, plagiarism, bullying (including cyberbullying), or inappropriate social media use will result in disciplinary consequences.
District Device Care & Financial Responsibility
Students must:
- Treat district devices with care.
- Return devices in the same condition received.
- Accept responsibility for lost or damaged devices.
SUSD offers an Optional Device Protection Plan.

Privilege & Monitoring
- Use of district technology and network resources is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked at any time.
- SUSD reserves the right to monitor all device and network activity.
- Email and electronic communications are not private.
- Files may be reviewed or deleted if necessary.
- All files are public records. Some information may be protected as confidential under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- SUSD is not liable for service interruptions or system changes.
Consequences
Violations of these protocols may result in:
- Suspension or termination of technology privileges
- School disciplinary action
- Financial responsibility for damages
- Legal consequences
- Suspension or expulsion (when applicable)
Technology Use Agreement
Parents/guardians acknowledge the Uniform Code of Student Conduct and the Technology & Network Resource Protocols, including:
- Technology access is for educational purposes only.
- Students must use the district-issued laptop for classroom instruction and testing.
- SUSD does not support Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
- Students must not send or receive illegal or offensive material.
- Students must not circumvent content filters.
- Parents are responsible for supervising student technology use outside school.
- Permission is granted for their child to access SUSD network resources.
- Student/Parent/Guardian accepts responsibility for lost/stolen/damaged devices.
- District is not responsible for any personal device brought to campus.
