CTE Month continues as we shine a spotlight on the Finance CTE program at Chaparral High School. In this episode, we’re joined by teacher Mason Renfer and student Cannon Rierson to explore how the program prepares students to confidently manage their own finances and navigate the business world.
From personal finance and investing to economics and the impact of global companies, students build real-world skills in money management, credit, and smart spending. The conversation also highlights how participation in DECA helps students take their learning to the next level through competition and leadership experiences.

The financial services sector is fundamental to the U.S. economy. Make money helping others manage theirs!
According to ACTEonline.org, most jobs in financial services call for postsecondary education, although a certificate or associate degree can help people gain entry-level jobs such as insurance sales agent. Individuals can pursue certain occupations by earning industry-recognized certifications such as the Certified Financial Planner™, Accredited Financial Counselor® or Certified Payroll Professional credential. These and other credentials verify technical, academic and employability skills to prepare financial records, value assets, audit businesses and organizations, help people and businesses make financial decisions, and more.

Principles of Personal Finance provides students with the tools to manage their own finances in life. Principles of Business offers a broad view of business practices in year two of this program. From personal finance and investing to economics, students learn the importance of money management. Topics include taxes, checking accounts, banking, managing credit effectively, the financial consequences of debt, risk management, and investments. Students also explore how global companies such as Apple, Google, and Facebook impact the economy.

This course provides students an opportunity to learn critical elements associated with finance. Students will be exposed to multiple areas relating to banking, budgeting, business ethics, accounting, capital planning, acquisitions, insurance, financial analysis, investments and portfolio management, and customer service. In addition, students will learn the fundamentals of the stock market and the significance of participating in stock ownership within a global economy. The content will enable students to gain the necessary knowledge required to acquire and sustain financial freedom. This course leads to industry-recognized certification.

Make your financial dreams come true. Learn how to make your money grow by taking this course. You will design your own “Financial Portfolio”. Topics include taxes, checking accounts, banking, managing credit effectively and financial consequences of debt, risk management and investments. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Arizona DECA has over 6,250 members, with over 225,000 DECA members internationally.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is the largest and oldest business student organization in the world, with a quarter million students preparing for careers in business and business-related fields! FBLA is in over 125 schools in Arizona and has 5,500 members. This year, more than 2,000 students, advisers, and community volunteers attended their State Leadership Conference.
