“Math Powers Possibility”: SUSD’s Wildly Important Goal Aims to Triple Algebra Success by 2030

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (January 20, 2026) –  Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) is charging into 2026 with bold vision and even bigger goals. At the center of this momentum is “Math Powers Possibility,” a districtwide Wildly Important Goal (WIG) designed to ignite curiosity, elevate achievement, and open pathways to future success for every student.

The WIG underscores SUSD’s commitment to long-term excellence: By May 2030, SUSD aims to increase the percentage of 8th graders successfully completing Algebra I (or more advanced math coursework) from 25% to 75%, a monumental leap supported by an annual increase of 3% proficiency as measured by AASA.

This transformative goal drives every component of “Math Powers Possibility,” anchoring the district’s commitment to expanding opportunity through stronger mathematical foundations.

Key Initiatives That Will Help Us Achieve This Goal:
  • Year-Round Learning Through Modern Tools
    • Implementation of learning management systems and digital tools that support ongoing learning and reinforce mathematics proficiency throughout the entire year.
  • Math-Focused PLCs in All Middle Schools
    • Middle schools will implement math-focused Professional Learning Communities with documented use of common formative assessments and reteach plans to ensure consistent, high-quality instruction.
  • Increased Student Confidence in Math
    • District survey tools will be used to measure and increase student confidence, ensuring that learners not only excel in math but also believe in their ability to succeed.
  • Student Focus Groups on Math Beliefs & Mindsets
    • Regular student focus groups will gather feedback on mathematical beliefs, dispositions, and classroom experiences to inform instructional practices.
  • Family Math Education Nights
    • SUSD will host family information and education nights that share strategies and supports for developing algebra readiness, beginning as early as kindergarten.
  • Math Progress Updates for Families of Grades 6–8
    • Families will receive clear progress updates and support resources based on AASA results to help guide students through the critical middle-school math years.
  • Professional Learning for Teachers
    • Robust professional development (including math engagement practices, instructional coaching, and programs like FUSE fellowships) will strengthen teacher capacity and instructional quality.
  • Personalized & Responsive Digital Learning Tools
    • District-supported digital tools, such as machine learning platforms and AI tutoring systems, will provide personalized enrichment and support tailored to each student’s needs.
  • Data-Driven Interventions & Targeted Tutoring
    • SUSD will strengthen data-driven practices to identify at-risk students early and provide targeted math interventions focused on essential standards.
Why It Matters

“Math Powers Possibility” is more than a goal, it’s a promise to students and families. Through strengthened instruction, innovative tools, and expanded support systems, SUSD is preparing every student to step confidently into the future with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in high school, college, and their career.
