Championship Season Earns Saguaro Catcher Arizona's Highest Baseball Honor

Scottsdale, Ariz. — After helping lead Saguaro High School to a 4A State Championship and one of the program's most memorable seasons in recent history, senior catcher Alain Gomez-Gudiño has been named the 2025-26 Gatorade Arizona Baseball Player of the Year.

The prestigious honor recognizes the state's top high school baseball player for excellence in athletics, academics, and character. Now in its 41st year, the Gatorade Player of the Year program celebrates student-athletes who not only dominate in competition but also make meaningful contributions in the classroom and their communities.

For Gomez-Gudiño, the recognition comes after a season that showcased his impact in every facet of the game.

The catcher helped lead the Sabercats to a 25-8 record and the 4A State Championship, cementing his place among Arizona's elite high school baseball players. At the plate, he batted .455 with six home runs, 35 RBI, and a 1.332 OPS. Behind the plate, he threw out 33.3 percent of attempted base stealers, making him one of the state's most complete players.

His performance earned him Arizona Baseball Coaches Association 4A Player of the Year honors, as well as MVP recognition in the 4A State Championship game.

"Alain changes the game every time he steps on the field," said Saguaro Head Baseball Coach Gerald Laird. "He's the kind of player every coach hopes to have because he impacts winning in so many ways. His leadership, competitiveness, and commitment to excellence helped drive our state championship season, and no one is more deserving of this honor."

The accolades extend beyond Arizona. Gomez-Gudiño is ranked as the nation's No. 46 overall prospect in the Class of 2026 by Perfect Game and the No. 224 overall draft prospect by Baseball America. He has signed a written letter of athletic aid to continue his baseball career at the University of South Carolina.

While his accomplishments on the field are impressive, Gomez-Gudiño's impact reaches far beyond baseball.

He has maintained a 3.47 GPA while balancing the demands of academics and athletics and has dedicated time to serving others through the Scottsdale Miracle League, which provides children, teens, and adults with disabilities and special healthcare needs the opportunity to play baseball.

"Alain embodies what we hope all student-athletes strive to become," said David Abrams, Saguaro Athletic Director and Assistant Principal. "He excels in competition, succeeds in the classroom, and gives back to his community. This award recognizes not only his talent but also the character and leadership he demonstrates every day."

Gomez-Gudiño joins a distinguished group of Gatorade Player of the Year recipients across the country, an alumni network that includes professional athletes, Olympians, coaches, and leaders in a variety of fields.

For Saguaro High School and Scottsdale Unified School District, the recognition is a celebration of a student-athlete whose achievements have brought pride to his school, inspired younger players, and demonstrated what is possible through hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence.
