SUSD's Third Annual College & Career Fair Is This Weekend!
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Sept. 9, 2024) – Choosing a college and career path is a pivotal decision for high school students and their families, with many considerations. Post-secondary institutions offer more programs of study and degrees than ever before, technical schools provide immediate career opportunities, and tuition costs continue to increase. Then there is location: stay close to home or venture to another part of the country or world? It is little wonder that the process of deciding what to do post-high school can be overwhelming.
To help bring some clarity to that huge undertaking, Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) will host its third annual College & Career Fair on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Scottsdale Stadium Field House, located at 7408 E. Osborn Rd., Scottsdale, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At the fair, SUSD high school students and their families will have the opportunity to meet representatives from more than 100 colleges and universities from around the country, as well as local community colleges and technical schools. Students interested in serving the nation in the U.S. military will find representatives from the Air Force, Army and Marines there, too, as well as several U.S. military service academies, including the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Next week’s College & Career Fair will also be the perfect place for families to learn more about SUSD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways, which empower students while in high school with the learning and skills to attend the college of their choice when they graduate, join the world of work with an industry certification, or both.
SUSD is proud to offer CTE career paths in nine, in-demand fields: Business Operations, Communications Media Technology, Finance, Health Science, Hospitality and Tourism, Information Technology, Law and Public Safety, Marketing, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Local organizations and school district community partners whose work aligns with SUSD’s career pathways will also be on hand to answer students’ and parents’ questions about what they look for in potential employees.
“We want to help students see ‘the possible’ right here, right now, while they’re in high school,” said SUSD Director of College and Career Readiness, Amy Downs. “What are they interested in? What are their strengths that will help them reach their long-term goals and how can we help get them there?”
“We also connect students with local internships, career and technical student organizations, and networking opportunities that provide valuable insights and experience to help them refine their career aspirations,” Downs continued.
If higher education is the choice, being aware of the ins and outs of the college application process is key. That is why resume-building, scholarship and financial aid resources will be available at the Sept. 14 SUSD College & Career Fair, including how to complete the ever-important FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application through which students learn about scholarships and grants they may qualify for that can help reduce the price of attendance.
“Whether you’re a freshman just starting to think about four years from now or a senior ready for those next steps, we hope to see you at our fair!” concluded Downs.
