Arts Education Week: September 8-14
As we approach Arts Education Week, which starts September 8th, it's time to honor the invaluable contributions of our arts teachers and the creativity of our arts students.
This weeklong celebration emphasizes the essential role that arts education plays in fostering creativity, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation among students. Engaging in the arts not only enhances academic performance but also improves social skills and promotes emotional well-being. We encourage everyone to share their stories related to arts education on social media using the hashtag #ArtsEducationWeek.
Let’s come together to inspire future generations by highlighting the transformative power of the arts and expressing our heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated arts teachers who are shaping the creative minds of tomorrow!
Ingleside Music Programs Hit the Summer Road
Students from the Ingleside Middle School choir, band and strings programs performed at the Arizona chapter of the American Choral Directors Association’s (AzACDA) June summer conference concert at Mesa Community College. The piece they performed, "Lost Nursery Rhymes of Innocent Children," was written by Christie Morrison, a Canadian composer who is passionate about Holocaust education and the arts, and who is a friend of Valley Holocaust survivor Oskar Knoblauch.
Ingleside choral teacher Samantha Jorgensen reports that the impact on students in not only learning and performing the piece but also coming to understand about its origins has been profound. And in the process, they had the opportunity to meet Mr. Knoblauch and other local Holocaust survivors, creating an enriching experience for all.
Heading into September Strong!!
Be sure to check out the Fine Arts calendar on the new SUSD website!
High school marching bands are performing at home football games and begin their marching season this month. These students have been working all summer and were ready on day one with pep band music and they continue to work on their stadium tunes to keep our sports fans energized to cheer on our high school teams.
Be sure to stick around for halftime to see the bands perform the shows they do in one or both competitive, state marching band circuits - the Arizona Band and Orchestra Directors Association (schedule to be loaded the second week of September) and the Arizona Marching Band Association (performance schedules are loaded two weeks before each competition).

Our five high school marching bands are warming up their instruments and prepping to be ready for first day of school pep rallies, football games, and their own upcoming competitions. The students have been rehearsing 8-10 hours a day in recent weeks and getting fitted for their uniforms. We are all looking forward to their first performances!
Also, put the evening of November 5th on your calendars now. That’s the date of our annual SUSD Marching Band Invitational. All five high school marching bands will perform their competitive shows for you at this free event. Time and location information will be posted on the arts calendar by the end of August. We have a fun plan for the end of night that will have all audience members on their feet! #BecauseKids

Amazing SUSD Seniors Honored with State Arts Proficiency Seals
One hundred just-graduated high school students who demonstrated high levels of proficiency in the Arizona Arts Education Standards during their four years in SUSD Arts Education programs received an Arizona Department of Education Arts Proficiency Seal on their diplomas last week. These talented students are composers, all-state musicians, visual art award recipients, fashion designers, choreographers, and playwrights. Broadway Star Sam Primack Returns to Chaparral High School!
Recently, Chaparral High School welcomed back Broadway star Sam Primack. A former Firebird himself (Class of 2019), Sam returned to hold an inspiring musical theatre masterclass for his alma mater’s drama students. While a student at Chaparral, Sam won Best Lead Actor at the ASU Gammage High School Musical Theatre awards and was a finalist for the national level "Jimmy" Award, which eventually led him to starring in the title role of the final Broadway cast of the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen.
During the masterclass, students were randomly selected to a sing a song of their choice. Sam shared invaluable feedback on the students' performances, offering tips and insights from his professional experiences. As a token of his appreciation to the program, Sam gifted a framed polo from the Dear Evan Hansen production to the Chaparral Theatre program. Sam was then presented with an Alumni Achievement Award.
Visual Arts Students Shine at Scottsdale Center for the Arts Visions’24 Exhibition!
Celebrating its 25th anniversary as one of the longest-running teen art programs in the country, Visions invites six Valley high schools each school year to bring their most proficient art students to Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) to engage in monthly tours and workshops with professional artists. Throughout the school year, students also come together for a weekend-long, outdoor retreat, visit artist studios, and tour college and university art departments, thanks to Scottsdale Arts’ partnerships with the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and Paradise Valley Community College.
To close out this opportunity, seven students from Chaparral High School’s Photography classes and seven students from Desert Mountain High School’s Sculpture classes were tasked with creating a final piece that is expressive of topics important to them. Their creations are on display in a culminating exhibition called Visions ’24 . The exhibit in the Scottsdale Center for the Arts’ Center Space Gallery (7380 E. 2nd St., Scottsdale) highlights the skills, inspirations, and ideas exchanged between Visions’ students and the program’s teaching artists.
Visions ’24 is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on Sundays from noon – 5 p.m. The exhibition runs until September 22nd, so that should give you plenty of time to stop by and take in our students’ fabulous talents!

Annual IB Visual Arts Exhibition
As part of their International Baccalaureate studies, Desert Mountain HighSchool’s IB HL and SL Art Design students create, curate and exhibit their work each school year. These amazing artists took care of the exhibition part of their class requirement last month, which constitutes 40% of their grade. Their journaled process portfolio counts for another 40% and a written and illustrative comparative study rounds out the final 20%. It’s not enough to be creative artists – they must also be able to research their ideas and write about their design process. We are so proud of senior Gretchen Bagby, junior Naiah Catron, senior Sara Hammouri, junior Mackenzie Kilpatrick, senior Finley MacNeil and senior Lilia Zencenko!
Spring Art Walks/Festival and Nights
The arts are alive throughout SUSD elementary and middle school campuses. Springtime finds our schools holding evening events that bring their communities together to celebrate each student’s achievement in the performing and visual arts. It is wonderful to celebrate the incredible creativity in our students and bond with families on these beautiful evenings.
SUSD Jazz Night
Did you know that April was Jazz Appreciation Month? What better way to celebrate jazz than by bringing together all of our high school Jazz Bands and the Scottsdale Community College Jazz Band to perform outdoors in the SCC Amphitheatre? The evening was beautiful, the music was powerful, the student’s creativity was exceptional and the smiles on the parents’ and teachers’ faces were heartwarming. It is incredible what these kids accomplish under their instructors – an amazing night of Jazz!!
Outstanding Communities for Music Education
The NAMM Foundation announced in April the communities throughout the nation that most support Music Education, and SUSD was named again this year! How do we receive such an honor over other school districts in the state and nation? We offer K-12 music education in ALL of our schools. We provide instruments for those in need. We have performance spaces for all ensembles throughout the district. Every student in SUSD can receive a music education and build that creative side of their learning. Studies have shown students who receive a music education have higher grades, improved literacy and are 24% more likely to graduate!
Student Wins Valley Metro’s Transit Wrap Competition!
Chaparral High School art student Jackson Washburn has been named the winner of the 2024 Valley Metro Transit Wrap Contest. Jackson’s artwork will be proudly featured on a public transit bus and light rail train for the next year, so there’s no telling where you might see them around the Valley! We are so excited to see where the Firebird junior’s talents take him in the future. Read more about Jackson and the Growing with sUSd coloring book he has created for the district in the Spring edition of the district’s Showcase magazine!
Spring Trips and Tours
Middle school and high school performing arts students have been performing and competing all over the United States and, of course, bringing home top honors. Bravo to our teachers and students for exemplifying the world-class education you are receiving in SUSD! Just a few of the photos are included, but they are very impactful – Chaparral Choir performing in New Orleans, Saguaro Choir performing in Washington, D.C., Chaparral Jazz Band at the California Jazz Festival, to name a few!
We had some big winners at the competitive spring trips: Gold ratings for DMHS Choir, Ingleside Choir and Mohave Orchestra on their California trip, and the Saguaro Orchestra cleaned house in Boston – 1st and 2nd place, Overall Best Ensemble and the Esprit De Corps Award for ensemble that exemplifies all that a school would want in its students through behavior, respect and musicality.
Musicals in the Air
Many of you have seen the recent publicity around our high schools’ musical productions, but did you know about the amazing middle school Theatre productions? We had Willy Wonka at Mohave and Cocopah, Little Mermaid at DCMS, Dr. Seuss at Mountainside, and Legally Blonde at Ingleside. If you get a chance, check out Sequoya Elementary School’s May 9th or 10th performances of Aladdin!
Chaparral High School Concert Band and Jazz Band Sweep State!
Congratulations to the Chaparral High School Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble I which brought home a Superior with Distinction at the recent State Festival. The rating these two ensembles received is the highest rating that can be received at a State Concert and Jazz Festival. Bravo to their instructor, Jennifer Mireau, and all of her students who always perform at the highest levels possible!! #SUSDProud

Regina and The Plastics Take Over Chaparral April 4-6
It’s going to be so “fetch”! Mean Girls hits the Chaparral stage April 4-6 at 7 p.m.! Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Chicago. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. Good luck with that!
Don’t miss your favorite characters from the movie, choreography from the Broadway show, and the iconic quotes that made Tina Fey’s hit so brilliant. The Plastics expect you to be there. Buy your tickets here.
And on Stage at Coronado …
“Feed me!” In Little Shop of Horrors, meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names "Audrey II," after his co-worker crush. The foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore, presented by the Drama Dons, takes the Coronado High School Auditorium stage April 17-19. Everything goes fine for a time for the down-and-out Krelborn, as long as he keeps feeding the blood-thirsty plant, which, he comes to find out, has global domination on its mind.
The show is rated PG-13. Doors open at 6 p.m.; the curtain goes up at 6:30. Tickets will be on sale at the door: $10 general admission, $7 with a student ID.
Annual Heard Museum Student Art Show
Artwork by three SUSD Native American students was proudly displayed and auctioned at the recent Heard Museum Student Art Show in Phoenix. Contributing pieces to the competition were Saguaro High School’s Gerica Whitehair (Navajo), and Michael Peralta (Pasqua Yaqui) and Benjamin Adson (Navajo), both from Coronado High School. Gerica’s work won 1st place; Michael’s won 2nd place. All three pieces are truly beautiful creations and speak strongly of the students’ heritage.
Chaparral Students’ Film Chosen for Festival Showing
Icebreaker is one of 17 student entries in this year’s Arizona Student Film Festival, part of the annual Phoenix Film Festival that runs at Harkins 101 from April 4-14. The creation of Chaparral High School’s Filmmaking Club and helmed by senior Carolyn Robertson, Icebreaker is the heartwarming story about a blind date and the relationship that develops between two students, portrayed by Firebirds Hector Flores and Miranda Sherrill Madrigal. The film runs just under five minutes and will debut on the big screen on April 13.
Celebrating its 17th year, the Arizona Student Film Festival and competition celebrates the next generation of Arizona filmmakers. Let’s go, Chaparral!
Area Concert and Jazz Festivals
- The students at Desert Canyon ES had a wonderful time on March 26th (photo), participating and watching schools from around the state perform at the Campo Verde High School Area Festival. They were the only 5th graders there, as this event is generally attended by 7th and mostly 8th graders. Students perform two musical selections for three judges, who then score the group and provide feedback through a "clinic." Our clinician happened to be former SUSD employee Bethany Cross. We are proud to announce that our students received a score of Excellent for their efforts!
- Arcadia High School had a great run at the Area Festival and is taking all groups to State at the end of April! The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Orchestra, Concert Orchestra and Jazz Band all received Excellent ratings and the Wind Ensemble received an Excellent with Recognition!
- Chaparral High School musical groups were outstanding at their qualifying Area and Jazz Festivals: Jazz II received an Excellent rating and outstanding soloist Eli Klein on Trombone, Jazz I, received a Superior with Distinction (the highest rating possible). Outstanding soloist awards went to Hannah Brown on Saxophone and Jonah Feldman on Tenor Sax. Both Jazz Bands head to California the first weekend of April for the SoCal Jazz Spectacular Festival. Good luck! If that was not enough, Chaparral’s Wind Ensemble received an Excellent with Recognition at the concert festival. Way to go, Firebirds!
- Desert Mountain High School hosted one of the Area Festivals and its Symphonic Band brought home an Excellent, the Wind Ensemble received an Excellent with Recognition. Congrats, Wolves!
- The Desert Mountain High School Choir received a Superior with Distinction from the AZACSA (Arizona Choral Directors Association) on March 26! Congratulations, Wolves, on a wonderful performance!
All-State Festivals for Band, Orchestra, and Choir
Elementary and Middle School All-State Orchestra Festival
SUSD had nine students participate in this annual event, held this year at Perry High School in Gilbert on March 23. The students rehearsed all day, then put on a performance for their families. These students were selected across the entire state of Arizona for this honor and truly reflect our district’s Strategic Plan, part of which calls for Academic Excellence in the Performing Arts Classes.
Five students represented Cocopah Middle School: Alexander Oberle (7th grade), Camilo Tafur (7th grade), Carter Snow (6th grade), Ethan Petronio (6th grade) and Sydney Bales (6th grade).
Four SUSD students were part of the elementary ensemble: Camila Marquez (5th grade), Ryder Daizadeh (5th grade) and Olivia Franz (5th grade) attend Hopi Elementary. Noelle Recla (5th grade) represented Tavan Elementary. (photo)
High School All-State Band, Orchestra and Choir Festival
High school musicians have gone through a three-month audition process at both the Regional and State levels. The audition consists of scales, multiple études and sight reading. It is an incredible achievement to make the All-State ensembles and carves a pathway to future scholarships at the university level! Bravo to these incredible musicians.
The students who made these incredible ensembles and will travel to the University of Arizona to rehearse and perform from April 11-13 are:
Arcadia HS: Andrew Brown, Henry DeHaan
Chaparral HS: Lauren Burnside, Hannah Brown, Malori Nierad
Desert Mountain HS: Armaan Patel, Lillie Harper, Michael Erickson, Cassidy Veale, Maximilien Farkas
Saguaro HS: Connor Thornburg, Jake Weiss
Theatre Schools Unite During Spring Break
The Coronado and Saguaro High School Theatre programs shared part of spring break together over in California, where they participated in Broadway workshops taught by cast members of Chicago: The Musical. They were able to see the show, too, at the Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard and took part in a meet-and-greet with the actors afterwards. They learned a great deal about film and TV when they went on tours of the Warner Brothers studios and, of course, they had some fun adventures at Universal Studios! What a fun-filled learning experience for our youth Thespians.
2nd Annual Family ArtsFest – District Arts Festival
March 22nd and 23rd were an amazing celebration of the arts, SUSD, the City of Scottsdale, ASU SkySong and Scottsdale Community Partners. In its 2nd year, the ArtsFest event was even bigger and better this year, and attendance was greater, too.
Three indoor SkySong spaces became museums, chock-full of incredible artwork created by our SUSD students. The pieces of art were judged by arts curators and directors from SMOCA (Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art) and the Phoenix Art Museum. The judges were blown away by the quality and creativity of the student art pieces and shared many wonderful comments about the quality of SUSD’s arts educators. Dr. Scott Menzel found it quite challenging to choose just one piece from each school to receive the Superintendent’s Award! He, too, was incredibly impressed with the level of work that was on display. Some SkySong employees even asked if they could purchase the student art. We politely declined!
When you exited the visual arts displays, you were welcomed with incredible music and theatrical presentations on the two stages (Café and Main Stage). Staging was conducted by our own students, under the guidance of SUSD Lead Auditorium Technician Todd Stover and the audio and light teams of Creative Backstaging (an SUSD partner). A HUGE shout-out to those students. They worked both days on lighting, audio, set changes and everything else asked of them. We could not have done it without you, Michael Gross from Saguaro HS and Blais Georges, Lily Svancara, John Falls, Carter Freidburg, Erika Bello Munoz and Yazmine Montes from Arcadia HS.
Thirty-two SUSD performing ensembles took the two stages and more than 1,000 pieces of 2D and 3D art were on display. Empty Bowls also conducted its annual fundraiser that included bowls created by Hopi Elementary, Cocopah Middle and Coronado High schools, as well as local artists. The effort raised $67,000 to help feed our families in need in our community.
The City of Scottsdale took part in ArtsFest, as well, with displays by the Police, Fire and Water departments, CSI trailer, DUI Task Force, Public Library, Waste Management, and Parks and Rec.
Another HUGE shout-out goes to Scottsdale Arts, which provided an art tent for families, a photo booth, a puppetry trailer, and a paper/light activity booth. The food trucks filled the air (and tummies, too!) with savory and sweet delights.
We look forward to joining our amazing partners again next year and create even more opportunities to celebrate the City of Scottsdale and the Arts in SUSD. Thanks to all who supported us, either with their participation in performing/visual arts, our partners who made the event financially possible and the SUSD families for coming and supporting the district, Scottsdale, and the Arts. #SUSDProud
