Math Powers Possibility

By May 2030, SUSD will increase the percentage of 8th grade students successfully completing Algebra I or more advanced coursework from 25 percent to 75 percent.

This ambitious goal reflects our belief that strong math foundations unlock future academic, college, and career opportunities. Algebra is more than a single course. It is a gateway to advanced high school coursework, STEM pathways, and lifelong problem-solving skills that prepare students for an ever-changing world.

Why It Matters

Math Powers Possibility is more than a goal. It is a promise.

By strengthening instruction, deepening student support, and expanding innovative learning tools, SUSD is ensuring that every student enters high school, college, and their chosen career with the math skills and confidence they need to succeed.

Together, we are building confidence.
We are expanding opportunities.
We are proving that math truly powers possibility.

How We Will Achieve This Goal

SUSD is launching a comprehensive, multi-year approach to transform math learning across all middle schools.

Year-Round Learning Through Modern Tools

We are expanding learning management systems and digital platforms that support continuous math learning throughout the year, at school and at home.

Math-Focused PLCs in Every Middle School

All middle schools will establish math-specific Professional Learning Communities using common formative assessments, collaborative planning, and reteach strategies to ensure high-quality instruction for every student.

Building Student Confidence in Math

Districtwide surveys will measure student confidence and mindset, ensuring we support not only math skills, but belief in their ability to succeed.

Student Focus Groups on Math Mindsets

Focus groups will elevate student voices to better understand attitudes, experiences, and the learning conditions that help them thrive.

Family Math Education Nights

We will host districtwide family events to help caregivers support early numeracy and algebra readiness, starting as early as kindergarten.

Math Progress Updates for Grades 6–8

Families will receive clear updates, resources, and explanations connected to AASA results to help guide students through important math milestones in middle school.

Professional Learning for Teachers

SUSD will strengthen instructional excellence through coaching, engagement training, and opportunities such as FUSE fellowships.

Personalized & Responsive Digital Learning Tools

Students will have access to district-supported tools, including machine-learning platforms and AI tutoring, to personalize learning and meet their individual needs.

Data-Driven Interventions & Targeted Tutoring

Early identification tools will help us quickly support students who need additional help, with targeted tutoring focused on essential math standards.
