As part of Scottsdale Unified School District’s ongoing commitment to innovation, equity, and student success, these Artificial Intelligence (AI) Guidelines are designed to support the responsible, ethical, and effective use of emerging technologies across our schools and departments.

AI has the potential to enhance learning, streamline operations, and empower both students and staff, but it must be used thoughtfully with a focus on privacy, accuracy, and human-centered decision making. This resource provides clear expectations, practical guidance, and a shared understanding so that all members of our community can confidently navigate the opportunities and responsibilities that come with AI.

Purpose

SUSD is committed to purposeful AI integration, guiding teachers to assign AI use levels that intentionally leverage AI’s learning benefits while preserving tasks that foster independent thinking. The guidelines below help students understand how AI may be used for each assignment and ensures consistent, ethical, and appropriate AI usage across classrooms.

How To Use This Poster

Teachers:	Students:
Choose the AI level for each assignment and communicate it clearly. Use the examples as guidance for what is and isn’t allowed.	Follow the AI usage level your teacher assigns. When in doubt, ask before using AI.

AI Appropriate Usage Levels

Level 5 – Full AI Co‑Creation

Students may use AI to brainstorm, draft, revise, and co‑create content (i.e., text, images, audio, code, designs, summaries, etc.) with proper citation.

Examples:

Asking AI to help draft a full essay, story, lab report, or project outline
Using AI to generate a first draft, then revising it
Getting AI to create practice problems or examples, then completing them
Using AI to write code and debugging together with AI
Brainstorming and writing with AI as a partner in real time

Level 4 – AI‑Supported Revision

AI may help improve student-created work (editing, feedback, suggestions). Students create the work; AI helps improve it. Students clearly indicate how AI supported their work.

Examples:

Having AI check grammar, clarity, or organization in writing
Asking AI for feedback on a rough draft (“How can I improve my argument?”)
Getting AI to evaluate the strength of a thesis or claim
Asking AI to simplify or clarify a paragraph the student already wrote
Requesting suggestions for more precise vocabulary or transitions

Level 3 – AI‑Supported Research

AI may help students gather background information, outline ideas, ask/answer clarifying questions, explain concepts, and/or help students plan. Students clearly indicate how AI supported their work.

Examples:

Asking AI to explain a math concept or show sample problems
Using AI to summarize background information on a topic
Asking AI to define vocabulary or explain a science process
Using AI to help outline an essay after the student chooses the topic
Asking AI to compare two historical events or ideas

Level 2 – Limited AI Use (Idea Support Only)

AI may only be used in specific ways (e.g., brainstorming only), defined by and with permission from the teacher. Students clearly indicate how AI supported their work.

Examples:

Allowed to brainstorm ideas but not generate sentences
Allowed to ask AI questions, but not copy text into assignments
Allowed to use AI for research help, but not to create any part of the final product
Allowed to use AI tools for vocabulary or concept definitions only
Allowed to get coding hints, but not full solutions

Level 1 – No AI Use Allowed

AI may not be used in any way for this assignment — regardless of setting (school/home).

Examples:

Writing personal reflections, journals, or in‑class essays
Completing assessments, tests, or quizzes
Showing original problem‑solving steps in math
Conducting hands‑on science observations
Creating artwork, projects, or performances requiring personal expression
