AVID
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is a college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education.
AVID targets students in the academic middle who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. The program focuses on providing these students with the skills they need to be successful in school and beyond.
Program Goals:
- College Readiness: Equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in college.
- Critical Thinking: Develop students’ ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information.
- Collaboration: Foster teamwork and communication skills through group activities and projects.
- Organization: Teach effective note-taking, time management, and organizational strategies.
- Self-Advocacy: Empower students to take charge of their education and seek out resources and opportunities.
Curriculum and Instruction:
AVID’s curriculum is built around the WICOR methodology, which stands for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. These core components are integrated into the daily instruction and activities to create a rigorous and supportive learning environment.
- Writing: Students engage in various writing activities, from reflective journals to research papers, to enhance their writing skills.
- Inquiry: Students learn to ask probing questions and engage in deep discussions to develop their critical thinking abilities.
- Collaboration: Group work and peer tutoring are central to the AVID classroom, helping students to learn from and support one another.
- Organization: Students are taught how to organize their work and manage their time effectively, skills that are essential for academic success.
- Reading: AVID emphasizes reading strategies that help students comprehend and analyze complex texts.
