    Seal of Biliteracy

SUSD is excited to offer the Seal of Biliteracy to eligible seniors beginning with the 2018 graduating class.  30 states to date have adopted the Seal of Biliteracy, a program designed to recognize high school students who achieve proficiency in English plus at least one additional language. The seal is placed on the student’s diploma, noted on the transcript, and students will be recognized at graduation.

The Arizona Seal of Biliteracy Program recognizes high school students who achieve proficiency in English plus at least one additional language.

SUSD can currently award a Seal of Biliteracy for the following languages using testing provided through Avant STAMP 4S: Arabic, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin (traditional or simplified), Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish.  Students must receive a score of 5 in Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.

Process to pursue Seal of Biliteracy:

    • If a student is enrolled in a level IV language course, there is no fee. Students should work with their teacher to prepare for testing.
      • Students not enrolled in a level IV language course should make arrangements to take the test with their World Language Department at the school.  Students not enrolled in a level IV language course must also pay $20 to the bookstore to register for the test.
    • Testing usually occurs 2 weeks prior to spring break.
    • At the time of application, students will need to verify English proficiency by uploading an applicable test score. Click Here to learn more.
    • Once steps above are complete, apply for the Seal of Biliteracy for your graduation year:
      • Google form for Class of 2024
      • Google form for Class of 2025
      • Google form for Class of 2026
        • Students can complete the Google form at any time. However, there is a hard and final deadline of April 1st of senior year to submit all documentation.
    • Dr. Menzel will finalize a letter of notice for students who have met all the requirements to officially notify them of their Seal of Biliteracy status prior to graduation.
