Understanding the Academic and Social Emotional Needs of Gifted Learners Join Gifted Education Director, Karen Brown as she provides an overview of the continuum of gifted services available in SUSD. Parents will gain insights into various program models to determine which services best fit their children’s distinctive needs. Karen will share the different learning environments and how they support the academic and social/emotional needs of gifted learners.

“Perfectly Imperfect: Looking Beyond Unrealistic Expectations”
This session will guide parents through understanding the pressures, manifestations, and experiences related to perfectionism among our gifted learners. Research-based strategies will be provided to support families with recognizing the signs of perfectionism and strategies for support. Resources will be provided to support families with managing perfectionism.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Aimee Sulit is a Gifted Coach for SUSD in the Gifted Department. With over 23 years of experience in public education, she provides instructional coaching and support for gifted students, educators, and families throughout the state.

Presenter: Matthew Lins
“The Brain, Stress, and Mindfulness”
The Brain, Stress, and Mindfulness presentation will deliver current brain research on how the brain processes input and how stress is created. Implications of stress on student learning will be discussed, as well as research-based strategies to mitigate the effects of stress. Social emotional resources will be provided that work to reduce stress in student lives.
About the Speaker:
Matt Lins is the Clinical Services Coordinator for SUSD in the Student Support Department. He works with campuses to offer social emotional lessons and coaches on creating positive climates in classrooms. He also teaches the Brain Based Learning class at Scottsdale Community College.

Join Gifted Education Director, Karen Brown as she provides an overview of the continuum of gifted services available in SUSD. Parents will gain insights into various program models to determine which services best fit their children’s distinctive needs. Karen will also discuss how the virtual and in-person learning environments support the academic and social/emotional needs of gifted learners.
About the Speaker:
Karen Brown is the Gifted and Accelerated Learning Director for SUSD. In her role, she supports administrators, teachers, parents, and students in both the academic and social emotional areas. Karen teaches in the Gifted Education Masters’ Program at ASU and consults with districts throughout the country on curriculum, Common Core implementation, Depth of Knowledge, differentiation strategies, and depth and complexity training. Karen received the 2013 NAGC Professional Development Award and NAGC’s Gifted Specialist award in 2018. She co-authored the books, Differentiated Lessons for Every Learner: Standards-Based Activities and A Teacher’s Guide to Flexible Grouping and Collaborative Learning.
