Home of the Stallions!
DON'T FORGET!
Reminder! Wednesday, December 3rd is an Early Release Day for Teacher Inservice. School is dismissed at 12:15pm. Please remember to make arrangements for childcare or to pickup your children early. We always have a few pairs and spares left in the office at 1 or 1:30.
Safety Alert!!
For safety reasons, we ask that you monitor the balls you children bring to school. Nothing smaller than 'head-sized'. No more hard, rubbery, bouncy balls ('super balls' when I was a kid), tennis balls, soft balls, base balls or other similar small balls on campus, please. They are a danger to eyes as well as leaving nasty bruises. Thank you for your attention to this. The children's safety and health are a priority!

Learning Alert!!
We also ask for you assistance in helping keep toys at home. School is not a place for toys, as they disrupt the learning process. And again, thank you for your help; we can't do our job without your cooperation!

Gifted Testing ~ Testing for Kg-2nd and 4th-8th grade students will be Saturday, Jan 24th AND Saturday, Jan 31st. BOTH days are required for testing. All students, except current 3rd graders, are eligible, unless they have been tested for the gifted program in the last 12 months. If you are interested in having your child test, you may pick up a form in the school office or download it here (for Spanish form click here). Testing will be at Zuni or Pima Elementary and you need to indicate which you prefer on the form. The form must be returned to the office no later than Dec 19th (last day before winter break). No students with late forms will be tested.

SEQUOYA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

MISSION

Our mission at Sequoya is to meet the unique needs of each of our students through positive learning experiences which are academically challenging. Our school goal is to develop students who enjoy coming to school and will become life long learners.

PHILOSOPHY

Education should provide opportunities for all in a program to suit each individual child. Experiences should be academically challenging, wide in scope, child-centered and democratic, operating within a positive humanistic school climate. In meeting this commitment, Sequoya Elementary School is dedicated to promoting all phases of becoming life-long learners.

The educational philosophy of Sequoya is defined as follows:

1.         Provide each child with a program of studies and activities, which will bring about as much academic development as his or her potential allows.

2.        Encourage teachers to work as a cooperative team in providing an educational experience for each child that integrates all areas of the curriculum.

3.         Provide a staff which has high expectations of both itself and students in the pursuit of excellence.

4.              Provide a stimulating environment that is child-centered and helps develop within each child a positive self-concept.

5.         Provide an atmosphere which brings about mutual respect and consideration for classmates, adults, and the property of others.

6.         Provide students opportunities to develop decision-making responsibilities necessary in a democratic society.

7.         Provide a program that offers opportunities for parents/guardians to become partners in helping children reach their potential by becoming actively involved in the education of their children both at school and at home.

8.         Encourage parent/guardian volunteers and business partnerships to enrich the educational experiences of the students.

9.         Provide a commitment to the philosophy of community education by operating a variety of programs for children through adults at Sequoya Community School.

10.       Provide information to students, home and community concerning the educational program and its progress at Sequoya Elementary School.

Welcome to Ms Joan Bourque, our Artist in Residence. She will be assisting Sequoya students to create a mural for our school in celebration of the Twentieth Anniversary!  We are very excited to be starting on the mural. Ms Bourque was with us in Oct and the first week of Nov and will be again in Dec. The mural looks great; stop by and see how it's progressing!

Delicious Learning
Mrs. Robins’ 2nd grade class has been studying Johnny Appleseed.  To bring closure to their “Apple Study” a celebration was planned where the children were able to sample foods that are made from apples.  The students were engaged in various apple activities across the curriculum ranging from art projects, apple math activities, literature studies, cinquain poetry, apple graphing, apple observations and learning about the parts of an apple blossom.  The use of Thinking Maps: Bubble Map, Double Bubble Map, Tree Map, and the Brace Map were used to enhance the students thinking process.
