School district seeks input on HS business/computer technology, family and consumer science texts

Parents, students, teachers, and the community have the opportunity to view the business/computer technology and family and consumer science textbooks possibilities for the 2004-2005 school year is now under way The textbooks will be available for public review at the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Office located at Coronado High School.

Though no appointment is necessary to view the textbooks at the CTE Office, it is recommended to call Mitch Simmons, director of Career and Technical Education, at 480-484-6839 prior to visiting the CTE Office. Viewing hours at the CTE Office are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Persons seeking the textbook offerings may also make arrangements with the high school business/computer technology and family and consumer science department chairs to view the textbooks at Arcadia High School, Desert Mountain High School, Chaparral High School, Coronado High School, and Saguaro High School.

“We appreciate feedback from all community stakeholders regarding the selection of the CTE textbooks,” said Mitch Simmons, director of Career and Technical Education. “In addition, the textbook adoption process is a great opportunity for parents, business leaders, community members, and educators to communicate and get to know each other.”

Each CTE curriculum area has formed a textbook adoption committee comprised of CTE teachers, administrators, parents, students, and special area teachers (i.e., English Immersion Studies (EIS), Special Education, etc.). The focus of the adoption committee is to analyze input from the community and evaluate how well the textbooks incorporate Arizona Department of Education program competencies; cultural and gender sensitivity; inquiry-based teaching and learning; technology; real-life examples; problem solving; and communication skills.

After input is gathered from the individual committees, an adoption committee is scheduled to take the textbook adoption recommendations to the Governing Board in February.

For further information, contact Mitch Simmons at 480-484-6839.
