Lessons That Will Last A Lifetime
Scottsdale teacher returns from month long trip to Japan
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (November 9, 2005) – A deep respect for culture, history and the environment. These are the Japanese virtues most noted by a Scottsdale teacher who just returned from a life changing journey to the country.
Heather Mueller, a history teacher from Arcadia High School, was among 200 educators selected from thousands of teachers for The Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. Mueller spent much of October touring Japanese elementary, middle, high schools and colleges. She received a first hand look at the strong educational structure and programs in place.
“It was an experience that I wish all teachers could have,” says Mueller. “The opportunity to observe Japanese education at its best was truly a privilege.”
During her trip, Mueller was recognized at formal ceremonies hosted by Japanese government officials, including the Minister of Education. She also stayed with a host family and says they made her feel immediately welcome, just like a member of the family.
Mueller plans to share with students her many cultural experiences and the insight she gained about Japanese history and the country’s relationship with America.
The Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program is sponsored by the government of Japan and was launched in 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.S. government Fulbright program.
