Superintendent Erwin accepts new position in Illinois

Dr. Barbara Erwin, superintendent of the Scottsdale Unified School District since 2000, has accepted a position as superintendent of the St. Charles Community Unit School District in suburban Chicago. Dr. Erwin has tendered her resignation effective June 30, 2004.

“Four years ago I came to Scottsdale and was asked to address many issues; SUSD was under an Attorney General’s consent order and there were open meeting law issues, and we have moved this district into a stable position,” she said. “The things I was asked to do I have done, and I’m going home,” said Dr. Erwin, a native of the Chicago area.

She praised district teachers, administrators and other employees for their hard work over the past four years. “I am very happy to have called Scottsdale and this district home for the past four years.”

The Scottsdale Unified School District has 33 schools serving about 27,000 students. More than 3,000 persons are employed by the district, including about 1,700 teachers. The district celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1996. Its boundaries include most, but not all of the city of Scottsdale, almost all of the town of Paradise Valley, a section of the city of Phoenix, and a section of the city of Tempe.
