Scottsdale students shape empty bowls to raise hunger awareness

About 300 high school students from Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD) are teaming up with Scottsdale Community College (SCC) to raise hunger awareness. An “empty bowls” event to benefit Vista del Camino will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Nov. 5, at SCC.

Art students from Coronado High School and Saguaro High School are creating and donating non-lead based ceramic bowls specifically for the event.

“The bowls will have different designs, colors, and shapes for guests to choose from,” said Janet Blum, a Coronado visual arts teacher who is championing the project. Also involved is Susan Manning, an art teacher at Saguaro High School.

“This partnership with SCC fits with our curriculum and our goals. Students are required to perform 10 hours of community service a year,” Ms. Blum said.

The bowls may be purchased for a minimum donation of $5. The donation also buys a meal of pasta prepared by SCC’s student cafeteria staff.

“This partnership also teaches students about hunger awareness, which affects every community, including Scottsdale,” said John Biera, principal at Coronado High School.

The empty bowls event will be held in the Turquoise Room in the Student Center building (SC) at SCC, 9000 E. Chaparral Road, Scottsdale.

Empty bowls is a project that provides support for organizations that fight hunger. More information about this empty bowls is available from SCC at 480-423-6050.
