City, school district arrange drug awareness forum for parents

Drug trends among students; how to recognize warning signs such as clothing, jewelry, music, and artwork; and how to obtain help; will be among topics addressed in a drug awareness program for parents, arranged for by the Scottsdale Police Department and the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD).

The program will be offered on three different dates in October, at three SUSD school locations:

  • 7 to 9:30 p.m., Oct. 1, Desert Mountain High School’s auditorium 12575 E. Via Linda, Scottsdale.

  • 7 to 9:30 p.m., Oct. 2, Supai Middle School cafetorium, 6720 E. Continental, Scottsdale.

  • 5:30 to 7 p.m., Oct. 3, Saguaro High School auditorium, 6250 N. 82nd St., Scottsdale.

“This program was designed specifically for parents. As educators, we want to help educate parents, guardians, and others about teenage drug use in our community,” said Althe Allen, executive director of student service support for the Scottsdale school district.

The speaker for the forums is Detective Todd Raybuck, an 11-year veteran of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. He specializes in complex narcotics investigations and provides training on drugs and abuse, and drug trends. His presentations are sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

“Drug issues affect every community, especially middle and high school students,” said Scottsdale Police Captain Sean Duggan. “This is a unique opportunity for the Scottsdale Police Department, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the school district to bring valuable information to parents,” he said.
