Workshop informs parents about teen depression, suicide risks

Scottsdale Unified School District invites parents, teachers, administrators and community members to attend the Parent/Teacher Academy workshop titled Is this normal? Depression Suicide Risks at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 22, in the auditorium at Chaparral High School, 6935 E. Gold Dust Ave., Scottsdale.

Participants will learn to effectively recognize symptoms and risk factors associated with depression and suicide risks in adolescents, including indicators of when to seek professional help.

The program will be presented by the Jewish Family and Children's Service (JFCS). JFCS is a nonprofit, non-sectarian organization that strengthens the community by providing high quality behavioral health and social services to children, families and adults of all ages throughout Maricopa County.

In addition, teachers who attend the presentation can receive Career Ladder hours or staff development points, as well as recertification credits.

Topics for future forums include motivation, talking to teens about sex and bullying. To view the complete Parent/Teacher Academy calendar, please visit SUSD’s Web site at: http://www.susd.org/district/forparents/2004-2005ParentTeacherAcademyCalendar.pdf
