Voices of Saguaro students to perform at Carnegie Hall June 12

Fund-raising concerts March 10-12

Eighty-five Saguaro High School students will have the prestigious honor of performing at Carnegie Hall on June 12 – the only high school choir invited to participate in this performance, said GayLin Tutnick, director of Vocal Music at Saguaro High School.

There will be other choirs from Arizona, including members of the Arizona Masterworks Chorale, the Arizona Opera Chorus and Pima Community College Singers, as well as choirs from New York.

Voices of Saguaro is an award winning concert choir that has won seven consecutive first place finishes in national music competitions. The students will be performing “The Mozart Requiem,” the composer’s final piece, and are diligently working in class on the piece at least three days a week with the assistance of teacher Brian Hall.

“Voices of Saguaro was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall by Maestro John Massaro, who has conducted for the Arizona Opera and the Phoenix Symphony among others. Midland America Productions hires conductors from all over the country to conduct major choral and instrumental works at Carnegie Hall,” said Tutnick.

The students will be accompanied by The New England Symphonic Ensemble. In addition to performing “The Mozart Requiem,” there will be two other large choral works presented by choruses from all over the country – “An American Journey” by Jackson Berkey and “Requiem of Palms” by Robert Paul Baker.

To help raise funds for the trip, the school’s Vocal Music Department will stage a production of "A Century of Song." The performance is a show for audiences of all ages and features popular songs from every decade of the 20th Century. Show dates and times are at 7 p.m., on Thursday, March 10, Friday, March 11 and at 2 p.m., on Saturday, March 12 in the auditorium at Saguaro High School, 6250 N. 82nd St., Scottsdale. Tickets are available at the box office one hour before show times and cost $7 for adults, $6 for students and $5 for senior citizens and students under age 12.
