A Mother's Mission
Scottsdale teacher authors book on son’s disorder and helps others

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (September 30, 2005) -- A special education teacher at Scottsdale’s Aztec Elementary School is reaching out to parents and educators on an issue very close to home.

Nancy Hagener’s 11-year-old son was diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). She recently authored a book entitled The Dance of Defiance – A Mother and Son Journey with Oppositional Defiant Disorder which outlines the Hagener family’s journey as they searched for answers regarding the defiant behavior.

According to Hagener’s book, ODD is defined as a pattern of negative, hostile and defiant behavior lasting as least six months, during which four or more of the following are present: often loses temper, often argues with adults, often actively defies or refuses to comply with adults’ requests or rules, often deliberately annoys people, often blames others for own mistakes or misbehavior, is “touchy” or easily annoyed by others, is often angry or resentful and is often spiteful or vindictive.

Hagener’s book is filled with personal stories, insight and discovery on what it is like to raise a child with ODD. Her work is receiving praise from parents, teachers and physicians across the country.

To learn more, please join Hagener at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, October 5, at Changing Hands Bookstore, 6428 S McClintock Drive suite # C101, Tempe, Ariz.
