Arcadia, Coronado students participate in Academic Decathlon
Ten Scottsdale Unified School District students and their coaches will represent their schools this year for the 2005 Region IV Academic Decathlon competition. This event will take place on Feb. 4-5 at Hamilton High School, 3700 S. Arizona Ave. Chandler.
Arcadia High School
Students competing are Stephanie Horn, Hana Damore, Sara Combellick, Lauren Imbornoni and LiYang Tang. The Team coach is Melissa Weger.
Coronado High School
Students competing are Sean Harvey, Tara McMahon, Chance Brooks and Sean McBride. The Team Coaches are Dyan Cavalli, Chad Knapp, Sylvia Walters, Paul Tempe and Andrea Rogers.
Participating students are selected on the basis of grade point average and in-school competition. Each team is composed of nine students: three with A averages, three with B averages and three with C averages.
Competition Day activities consist of seven written tests , including Art, Economics, Language/Literature, Mathematics, Music, Social Science and Super Quiz; writing an essay; participating in a formal interview; and delivery of both a prepared and impromptu speech. The culminating activity of the Competition is the Super Quiz Relay – a team event held before a large audience. This year’s Super Quiz topic is Astronomy, Far Empty Space to Incredible Universe: The Sky is not the Limit.”
