Scottsdale Unified School District Arizona’s Most Excelling School District!

Dr. Ildi Laczko-Kerr, executive director of curriculum, instruction and assessment, and Gayle Holland, assistant principal at Chaparral High School, presented a draft of the 2008-2009 High School Planning Guide to the Governing Board. The presentation will be brought back as an Action Item at the November 27 Board meeting.

Katy Cavanagh, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning; Jeff Thomas, executive director of human capital; and Dr. Laczko-Kerr presented the Performance-based Compensation 2007-2008 District Plan to the Board. As a result of the 2005 legislative session, school districts are required to submit annual reports to the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) regarding Classroom Site Fund for Pay for Performance Compensation Plans. The legislation established requirements for individual district plans, including key elements that require Governing Board approval and identify recommended elements that plans should contain. Should the plans be modified, the requirements must be approved by the Governing Board at a public meeting. The Board approved the revised plan at its June 5, 2007 meeting. The Governing Board briefly reviewed key points of the submission to the ADE.

In other action, the Governing Board:

• Approved the recommendation of the naming of the Performing Arts Center at Coronado High School, the Eugene L. Hanson Auditorium.
   
• Approved the Proclamation for American Education Week.
   
• Approved the 2007-2008 High School Athletic Guidebook as amended.
   
• Approved the class ranking for the 2007-2008 calculation for the class of 2009 be rescinded and revert back to the prior calculation utilizing the overall GPA rather than the academic GPA. The administration also recommends that the implementation of the academic GPA calculation begin with the Class of 2012, freshmen starting in 2008-2009.
   
• Accepted gifts valued at $152,706. The gifts were received from Aztec PTO, C.H.A.P.T.S., Cherokee APT, Cochise APT, Copper Ridge PTO, Desert Canyon Elementary PTO, Desert Mountain PTO, Mountainside PTO, Navajo PTO, Sequoya APT, Arcadia Football Boosters, Chaparral Boosters, Cocopah Band Boosters, Desert Mountain Baseball Booster Club, Desert Mountain Choir Boosters, Mountainside Chorus Club, SUSD Foundation, Evey and Sherman Bendalin, Mimi Carroll, Jo Ellen Costello, Valerie Hauptman, David Lieberman, National Independent Flag Dealers Association, Office Max, Paradise Valley United Methodist Church, Scottsdale Charros, Scottsdale Healthcare, Sports Image, Target, Valley of the Sun United Way, Ginger Walker and Kenderick White.

The next two regular Governing Board meetings are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on November 27 and December 18 at the Education Center.
