BOARD BRIEFS |
The Governing Board voted to approve the Copper Ridge Math and Science Academy. This specialized program will open August 21, 2006, on our Copper Ridge campus at DC Ranch. Currently, there are 25 students enrolled in the program. Transportation will be provided to all students. Buses will pick up and drop off students at the high school nearest to their home. The Wellness Committee provided the Governing Board with presentations from three of the four subcommittees - Nutrition, Vending and Communication - and reviewed their progress toward implementation. The presentation included statistics, prevention, wellness outline, resources for SUSD, 2006-2007 recommendations, state nutritional standards and enhancements. In other action, the Board:
- Tabled the Information Item on the total funding needed for the proposed Capital Override. The presentation is available on the district’s Web site at: http://www.susd.org/district/govboard/meetings.htm.
- Tabled the installation of relocatable classroom buildings at Tavan Elementary School and Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center to accommodate student growth. The item will be brought back as an Action Item at the May 23 Board meeting.
- Tabled the issuance of request for proposal for a parent notification system indefinitely.
- Approved the Proclamation of National Teacher Appreciation Week May 7-13, 2006.
- Approved the Proclamation of National School Nurse Day May 10, 2006.
- Approved the recommendation for Copper Ridge Math and Science Academy.
- Approved Aztec Elementary School’s recommendation to pilot a straight grade configuration at each grade level concurrently with multiage/multi-grade classroom for the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 school year. - Approved the 2006-2007 Student Code of Conduct.
- Approved the annual renewal of intergovernmental agreement with the City of Scottsdale for student assistance/prevention programs.
- Approved the annual renewal of intergovernmental agreements.
- Approved to submit grant proposal for 2006 elementary and secondary school counseling program.
- Accepted gifts valued at $174,636. The gifts were received from Arcadia Baseball Boosters, Chaparral Yearbook, Desert Mountain Baseball Boosters, Desert Mountain Yearbook, Mountainside Band Boosters, Saguaro’s Letterman’s Club, Arcadia PTO, Cherokee APT, Cheyenne PTO, Cochise APT, Cocopah APT, Desert Canyon Elementary School PTO, Desert Mountain PTO, Kiva PTO, Laguna PTO, Mountainside PTO, Saberlinks PTO, Sequoya APT, Larry and Virginia Abbott, John E. Byrd, Juana Frederick, Honeywell Hometown Solutions, McCormick Ranch Little League, Randy Phobson, Scottsdale Charros, State of Arizona, Target, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wal-Mart and Wells Fargo.
A Special Board meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 23, at Cocopah Middle School, 6615 E. Cholla St., Scottsdale. The next Regular Governing Board meeting is at 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 6, at the Education Center.
