Meeting of April 11, 2006 BOARD BRIEFS

Dr. Althe Allen, executive director of secondary schools and excelling teaching & learning, presented the Governing Board with proposed changes to the 2006-2007 Student Code of Conduct. The presentation included standard of conduct, general information and behavior. The Elementary Code of Conduct was presented by Chad Caudle, assistant principal Tavan Elementary School, and included behavior and attendance regulations. The Secondary Code of Conduct was presented by Bryan Betts, assistant principal Saguaro High School, and included behavior: drugs and alcohol, behavior weapons, and Article C – attendance regulations. The item will be brought back at the May 9th meeting as a Consent Agenda Item. The presentation is available on the district’s Web site at: http://www.susd.org/district/govboard/meetings.htm.

Governing Board President Jennifer Petersen, presented the Board with a discussion of the Governing Board Ethics Policy, 360 Evaluation and Self-Evaluation. The item will be brought as a Consent Agenda Item at the May 9th meeting as amended.

In other action, the Board:

  • Approved the social studies texts and equipment. The materials that will be used to teach the middle school core curriculum. The presentation included shared beliefs of state committee, SUSD middle school committee, challenges for middle school adoption committee, sixth and seventh grade textbook selections, eighth grade selections, transition timeline, implementation support and purchasing expectations.   • Approved additional architectural/engineering services for Arcadia Bond Project to Orcutt/Winslow Partnership for services in the amount of $2,574.
     
  • Approved additional architectural/engineering services for Chaparral Bond Project to Orcutt/Winslow Partnership in the amount of $5,025.
     
  • Tabled the construction manager at risk for pre-construction services for Chaparral High School. The item will be brought back as an Action Item at a special meeting on April 18 at 9 a.m.
     
  • Appointed Molly Holzer as delegate and Karen Beckvar as an alternate to the June 24th Arizona School Boards Association delegate Assembly in Tempe, Ariz.
     
  • Approved the purchase of materials from Soar to Success, Wilson Foundations, Wilson Reading System and Great Leaps for use in Special Education Reading Programs.
     
  • Approved the TimeWarp Plus Series by Voyager to be used as curriculum for the EIS Summer School Materials Adoption not to exceed $100,000 including tax and shipping.
     
  • Approved changes to Governing Board Policy JLCD – Medicines/Administering Medicines to Students.
     
  • Approved the adoption of Governing Board Policy for the implementation of a surveillance camera system.
     
  • Approved modifications of school-related activities due to weather or environmental conditions.
     
  • Accepted gifts valued at $38,549. The gifts were received from Cochise APT, Hopi PTA, Pima PTO, Scottsdale Healthcare and Target.

An Executive Session/Special Meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m., Tuesday, April 18, at the Education Center. A Board Retreat is scheduled for 9 a.m., Monday April 24, at the Education Center. The next Regular Governing Board meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m., Tuesday, May 9, at the Education Center.
