Meeting of January 24, 2006 BOARD BRIEFS

Dr. Michael Wolf, administrator on assignment; Katy Cavanagh, executive director of middle schools and excelling teaching & learning; and David Peterson, chief of facilities management for learners; presented to the Governing Board information regarding the proposed high school program for the developing area. The potential programs include Technology and Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences and Humanities and the Arts. The update also included considerations for using existing facilities efficiently with the possible expansion of Aztec’s program to include seventh and eighth grades, possible expansion of Zuni’s program to include sixth grade, possible use of Desert Canyon Middle School classroom space for Desert Canyon Elementary School needs and the possible reconfiguration of Copper Ridge Elementary School to a K-8 program. The presentation also included long-term high school feeder patterns, high school facility options for the developing area, timelines, sample four-year schedules for the three program options, summary of benefits and next steps in the process. The presentation is available on the district’s Web site at: http://www.susd.org/district/govboard/meetings.htm. The item will be brought back to the Board at a meeting in March.

In other action, the Board:

  • Approved the Desert Canyon Middle School attendance boundary change. Currently, middle school students who live in the McDowell Mountain Ranch area are assigned to attend Copper Ridge Middle School. The boundary change will become effective for incoming sixth graders for the 2006-2007 school year. Students who attend Aztec and Zuni elementary schools will continue to feed to Desert Canyon Middle School.
     
  • Approved the District Technology Plan. The presentation is available on the district’s Web site at: http://www.susd.org/district/govboard/meetings.htm.
     
    • Awarded an RFP for Construction Manager At Risk for Chaparral High School to 3D International/Concord Companies, Inc.
     
  • Awarded an RFP for Construction Manager At Risk for Saguaro High School to D.L. Withers Construction.
     
  • Approved changes to Policy JFABC – Admission of Transfer Students.
     
  • Approved the High School Social Studies Adoption.
     
  • Approved the price increases for elementary and middle school lunches by .25 cents. This change becomes effective February 15.
     
  • Awarded an RFP for architects and engineering services for an amount not to exceed $200,000 for the 2005-2006 fiscal year and $350,000 for the 2006-2007 fiscal year to BPLW Architects & Engineers, EMC2 Group, HAD Architects and Schneider, Shay, Pian, Worcester Architects.
     
  • Approved to increase prior authorization for playground equipment through the Mohave Contract for an amount of $100,000 for a total not to exceed $200,000 for the 2005-2006 and not to exceed $300,000 for the 2006-2007 fiscal year.
     
  • Approved an Intergovernmental Agreement with the City of Phoenix for Resource Officers. Each year SUSD renews an IGA with the City of Phoenix for one school resource officer at Arcadia High School and one resource officer at Ingleside Middle School.
     
  • Accepted gifts valued at $191,545. The gifts were received from Chaparral Yearbook, Supai Student Government, Arcadia PTO, Cochise APT, Cocopah APT, Desert Canyon Middle School PTO, Desert Mountain PTO, Kiva PTO, Pima PTO, Mr. And Mrs. David Allen, Julie Alvarado, Arcadia Little League, AZ Foundation for Legal Services & Ed, Charro Don Chiappetti, Mike and Jennifer Gaumond, Brian Hawkins, Scottsdale Charros, Dr. Himansho Shukla, Dr, Judy Finney and Heartcare Foundation, William Tratnick, and Wells Fargo Foundation.

A Work/Study Board Meeting on the 2006-2007 Fiscal Year Budget is scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, February 9, at the Education Center. The next regular Governing Board meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m., Tuesday, February 14, at the Education Center.
