Special Meeting of Dec. 14, 2004 BOARD BRIEFS

The Governing Board listened as Bob Flach, chief financial officer; Cathy Rivera, executive director of Educational Services; Dr. Michael Helminski, principal at Kiva Elementary School; and Marsha Sturla, kindergarten teacher at Kiva Elementary School; discussed a K- 3 Override. The K-3 override requires that the Board take action prior to Jan. 17, 2005, in order to have the ballot issue for May 17, 2005. The maximum dollar amount for the K-3 Override is calculated by the average daily membership (ADM) and the K-8 revenue control limit. Five percent of the current revenue control limit is $3,123,619.

Research indicates that full-day kindergarten brings improved readiness for long-term student achievement and success. In addition to many academic benefits, all-day kindergarten will boost enrollment and enhance programs for all students, as well as save parents substantial tuition payments under the current structure.

The Governing Board asked the administration to place a resolution for notice of election as an agenda item at the Jan. 11, 2005, Board meeting.

In other action, the Board:

  • Awarded an RFP for Bond Underwriting Services to Peacock, Hislop, Staley & Given, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $2.25 per $1,000 of bond amount plus underwriter’s counsel expenses not to exceed $20,000. This award is for underwriting services for the sale of bonds as approved by the November 2004 election. The underwriting services may include verification agents, underwriters, bond registrar services, paying agent services and escrow trustee services. The award will save the district as much as $531,000.

  • Accepted gifts valued at $32,527. The gifts were received from Cochise APT, Copper Ridge Middle School PTO, Desert Canyon Elementary School PTO, 18th Century Society Foundation of AZ, Donald L. Chiapetti, DDS; Dorian Photography, Go Film, Inc., Holger Meyer, Minneapolis Jewish Foundation, Dr. Paull and Dr. Rollingher, Scottsdale Sunshine Rotary and Wells Fargo Foundation .
