The Governing Board, parents, teachers, and others learned the results of a districtwide survey regarding the calendar for the 2004-2005 school year. More than 13,000 parents, administrators, teachers, classified staff, and high school juniors responded. The survey was sent home with each child at the elementary and middle school levels, and mailed to high school parents. “Fifty percent of those who responded to the survey preferred the early start date, while 43 percent preferred the later start date, and 7 percent had no preference,” said Cathy Rivera, executive director of educational operations. However, the results were split almost down the middle with parents who responded to the survey. Forty-seven percent of parents favored an early start date, while 46 percent favored a late start date. Don Jefferies, associate superintendent added: “The results of the survey are extremely close and now the board has the difficult decision ahead of them.” The Governing Board is set to take action on the calendar at its next scheduled meeting, Oct. 7.
