Meeting of Sept. 16, 2003 BOARD BRIEFS

The Governing Board, parents, teachers, and others learned the results of a districtwide survey regarding the calendar for the 2004-2005 school year. More than 13,000 parents, administrators, teachers, classified staff, and high school juniors responded. The survey was sent home with each child at the elementary and middle school levels, and mailed to high school parents.

“Fifty percent of those who responded to the survey preferred the early start date, while 43 percent preferred the later start date, and 7 percent had no preference,” said Cathy Rivera, executive director of educational operations.

However, the results were split almost down the middle with parents who responded to the survey. Forty-seven percent of parents favored an early start date, while 46 percent favored a late start date.

Don Jefferies, associate superintendent added: “The results of the survey are extremely close and now the board has the difficult decision ahead of them.”

The Governing Board is set to take action on the calendar at its next scheduled meeting, Oct. 7.

In other business, the Board discussed setting a legislative-regulatory agenda for 2003-2004. Issues on the agenda include:

  • Unfunded legislative mandates
  • Local governance
  • Public school financing
  • Students FIRST
  • Excess utilities
  • Teacher pay for performance (Career Ladder)
  • Deseg funding
  • Testing

A tax reform plank will be added on the suggestion of Board Member Christine Schild. The proposal will be brought back for action Oct. 7.

A copy of the legislative-regulatory agenda proposal is on the Web site at: www.susd.org/district/govboard/meetings03-04.htm

In other action, the Board:

  • Approved the cancellation of RFP#4009 Food Service Snacks with the main ingredient listed as sugar. The Food Service Department made the recommendation, which is in line with its goal of serving healthier food choices to students.
  • Accepted gifts valued at $7,420. The gifts were received from the Pueblo PTO, Motorola Foundation, Mountainside Band Boosters, Aztec Community Team, and Dan and Helen O’Keeffe.

The next Governing Board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Education Center.
