BOARD BRIEFS |
The Governing Board lifted the flyer moratorium, which
has been in place since September. The two new policies include one governing
materials from school-related organizations such as PTOs and APTs (KHB),
and a second for materials from outside non-profit organizations (KHC).
The policies are available for review on the Communications
home page. For-profit organizations will not be able to send flyers
home.
In other action, the Board:
- Directed the administration to prepare a bond resolution
for the June 8 Governing Board meeting in the amount of $217 million
for the renovation of Coronado, Arcadia, Chaparral, Desert Mountain
and Saguaro high schools, as well as the purchase of school buses and
land.
- Voted 5-0 to hire an in-house attorney and administrative
assistant. The Board also voted to reject Bid #4108 for one yearly price
for all legal services.
- Eliminated club fees at middle and high schools
of $25 per club. Governing Board member Christine Schild requested that
the Board review student club fees.
- Reviewed the Scottsdale Unified School District
Policy Manual. The Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) suggested
that the Governing Board review the changed areas in the policy manual
indicated as substantive or new. The Board will hold a work/study session
to review section B of the manual.
- Approved the 2004-2005 Student Code of Conduct.
- Appointed Clerk Karen Beckvar as the delegate for
the ASBA Delegate Assembly. The Board also appointed Shari Avianantos
as the alternative delegate.
- Increased prior Board authorization for legal services
by $100,000 for the remainder of the fiscal year 2003-2004.
On June 6, 2003, the Board approved the award of RFP #3062, Legal Services,
in the amount of $550,000 to Lewis & Roca, Jennings, Strouss &
Salmon, Gust Rosenfeld and Miller LaSota & Peters. Due to unforeseen
legal matters, total fees for the year are expected to exceed the amount
that was estimated. Other alternatives being considered by the Governing
Board will take effect after the end of this fiscal year. An increase
is needed to take care of the current and ongoing matters.
- Accepted gifts valued at $56,831. The gifts were
received from Chaparral All Stars, Chaparral Science Booster Club, Desert
Mountain Yearbook Club, Pima Student Council, Saguaro Caring Committee,
Supai Student Government, Cheyenne PTO, Desert Mountain PTO, Kiva PTO,
Ingleside PTO, Mountainside PTO, Pueblo PTO, Sequoya APT, Arcadia Little
League, Arizona State University, Frederick S. Berry, Mr. Tino Ferrulli,
Foraker Foundation, Kroger, Target, USDA Forest Services and Wells Fargo.
The next Governing Board
meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 8, at the Education Center.
