MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING

OF THE GOVERNING BOARD

SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 48

                       

June 5, 2003

 

A Special Meeting of the Governing Board of the Scottsdale Unified School District, #48, Maricopa County, was called to order at 3:05 PM, at the Scottsdale School District Education Center Board Room, 3811 North 44th Street, Phoenix, Arizona. 

 

Board Members in attendance were Shari Avianantos, Clerk and Acting President; Karen Beckvar; and Christine M. Schild.  Sandra Zapien-Ferrero arrived at 3:35 PM.  Superintendent Barbara F. Erwin, and Associate Superintendent Don Jefferies were also present.  A quorum was present.

 

Ms. Beckvar moved to convene in Executive Session for:

 

A.       Discussion or consultation for legal advice with the attorneys for the District regarding claims by employee, Jerry McDonald, pursuant to A.R.S. §38-431.03(A)(3). 

 

B.       Discussion/consultation with the Board’s designated representatives in order to consider the Board’s position and instruct its representatives regarding negotiations with employee organization(s) regarding the salaries, salary schedules or compensation paid in the form of fringe benefits of its employees and other terms and conditions of employment, so that those representatives can properly represent the Board in upcoming “Meet and Confer” sessions, pursuant to A.R.S. §38-431.03(A)(5).

 

Mrs. Schild seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 3 – 0 (Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero had not arrived yet).

 

At 5:30 PM, the Special Meeting reconvened (with Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero).

 

Mrs. Schild moved that, in the event employee Jerry McDonald appeals the decision of the Superintendent’s designee, the Board authorize the Superintendent to select a hearing officer to hear the appeal and issue a report with recommendations to the Governing Board.  Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.

 

Mrs. Schild moved that the Board direct its designated representatives in the Meet & Confer process to proceed consistent with the discussion and consultation had in Executive Session regarding salaries, salary schedules or compensation paid in the form of fringe benefits of District employees.  Ms. Beckvar seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.

 

At 5:33 PM, Ms. Beckvar moved to adjourn the Special Meeting.  Mrs. Schild seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 4 – 0.
