MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING

OF THE GOVERNING BOARD

SCOTTSDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 48

                                                                                                                 

February 11, 2003

 

A Regular Meeting of the Governing Board of the Scottsdale Unified School District, #48, Maricopa County, was called to order at 7:30 PM, at the Scottsdale School District Education Center Board Room, 3811 North 44th Street, Phoenix, Arizona.  President Goldstaub called upon Ms. Beckvar to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Board Members in attendance were David R. Goldstaub, President; Shari Avianantos, Clerk; Karen Beckvar; Christine M. Schild; and Sandra Zapien-Ferrero.  Superintendent Barbara F. Erwin, and Associate Superintendent Don Jefferies were also present.  A quorum was present.  Mr. Goldstaub welcomed approximately 60 visitors.

 

President Goldstaub, upon a request from Ms. Beckvar, stated that he would like to modify the Agenda by hearing Information/Action Item VIII. A. Approval of Naming Baseball Field at Chaparral High School, after Item VI. Public Hearing.

 

Ms. Beckvar moved to approve the Agenda, as modified.  Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 5 – 0.

 

Recognition

Students from our high schools who participated in Unitown, a high school camp, along with Arcadia High School teacher Jackie Tooley, who is the all-district coordinator for Unitown, addressed the Board, thanking the Board for their support.  The students presented the Board Members and Dr. Erwin with a photo of the students who attended Unitown last month and tee shirts commemorating the event.

 

Public Comment

Jessica Cook spoke in support of naming the baseball field at Chaparral High School for Coach Jerry Dawson, who has been a positive influence on so many of SUSD students.

 

Andrew Gulla, representing the “proud members of the Chaparral High School Baseball team,” spoke in support of naming the baseball field at Chaparral High School for Coach Jerry Dawson, who has been a positive influence on so many of SUSD students.

 

Tim Rondina spoke in support of naming the baseball field at Chaparral High School for Coach Jerry Dawson, who has been a positive influence on so many of SUSD students.

 

Dan Gardiner spoke in support of naming the baseball field at Chaparral High School for Coach Jerry Dawson, who has been a positive influence on so many of SUSD students.

 

Gail Yount spoke in support of naming the baseball field at Chaparral High School for Coach Jerry Dawson, who has been a positive influence on so many of SUSD students.

 

Information/Action Item

Ms. Beckvar moved to approve Information/Action Item VIII. A. Approval of Naming Baseball Field at Chaparral High School the Jerry Dawson Field.  Mrs. Schild seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 5 – 0.

 

President Goldstaub thanked those parents and students who brought this matter to the Board’s attention.

 

Information/Discussion Item

Mr. Bob Flach, the District’s Chief Financial Officer, gave a presentation to the Board reviewing the recent Legislative Budget proposals.  Dr. Bill Johnson, the District’s Chief of Facilities and Operations, discussed with the Board excess utilities and reviewed how SUSD’s usage has changed over the years and how the Legislature proposes to phase out excess utilities over a period of years, ending in 2009.  Catherine Rivera, the District’s Executive Director for Educational Operations and the Director of English Immersion Studies, discussed the proposed changes in Desegregation Funding with Senate Bill 2357 and House Bill 2358.

Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero moved to approve the Consent Agenda in its entirety.  Mrs. Avianantos seconded the motion.  Mrs. Schild noted the personnel of the District who were retiring after 30 years or more of service to the community, and thanked them for their dedication.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 5 – 0.

 

Governing Board Reports

Ms. Beckvar and Mrs. Schild thanked the principals and staff of the schools they individually had recently visited.

 

Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero commented on her recent attendance of the Federal Relations Network as the Board’s representative, noting how valuable the conference had been.  She and others met with members of the Arizona Congressional Delegation to discuss education issues.

At 8:55 PM, Mrs. Schild moved to adjourn the meeting.  Mrs. Zapien-Ferrero seconded the motion.

 

The motion was approved with a vote of 5 – 0.
