How Are Students Identified for Gifted Services?

Testing Referral Procedures

Testing referrals may be made by any of the following persons who are familiar with the students' abilities, potential performance, and past records:

  • Teachers who have the students in class
  • Parents who refer their own children
  • Students who refer themselves
  • Administrators, student advisors, or other support personnel.

Referrals for children with handicapping conditions or limited English proficiencies are processed by the school Multi-disciplinary Team, which consists of an administrator, the school psychologist, a gifted services teacher, the student's classroom teacher, and other personnel as appropriate.

Parents may obtain referral forms from the Web site. Formal evaluation may begin only after the gifted services teacher has received written approval from a student's parent or guardian.

Placement Procedures

Once a student has qualified for the program, the green placement form is mailed home by the Gifted Services Office along with a letter, the students test scores and an explanation of the CogAT. Services can only begin after this form has been completely filled out and signed by the parent. The completed form should be mailed to:
