Issues and Options to Address Challenges
of Growth and Overcrowding in the Northern Tier of the District |
The Governing Board approved attendance boundaries
for the 2003-2004 school year, which include grandfathering for
all current high school students, middle school students, and fifth
graders. The 4-1 vote on Aug. 20, 2002, capped more than three years
of discussion and public input on addressing growth and overcrowding
in the northern tier of the District.
Options to accommodate growth and to minimize
the overcrowding of schools serving the northern tier of the Scottsdale
Unified School District were initially presented to the Governing
Board at its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, June 4, 2002.
The Board approved the administration's package of recommendations,
which were presented by Dr. Bill Johnson, chief of facilities and
operations, at its meeting Aug. 20.
The special report prepared by Dr. Johnson and
the administration was in response to a request by the Governing
Board, directing the administration to develop a plan for the 2003-2004
school year that addressed growth and overcrowding issues in the
northern tier of the district, without the construction of any new
facilities. Further, the Board requested that the plan be in place
at least one year prior to any changes in school attendance areas
or feeder patterns taking place.
The Board gave this charge to the administration
at its Nov. 27, 2001, meeting, following the defeat at the ballot
box of a bond election, a maintenance and operation (M&O) budget
override election, and a capital override election.
