T'was the night before the New Year,
And all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even the computer mouse.

Preparations are made to bring in the New Year,
When suddenly you remember
Tax credit time is here!

You run to your computer,
With a mad dash,
To make your tax credit contribution,
To SUSD with a flash.

Dollar for dollar, tax credit is applied each year,
Your donation costs you nothing but
Will bring our students, athletes and other programs great cheer

So as the end of the year draws out of sight,
Remember, donate tax credit,
To help SUSD's future stay bright!

A win, win situation! Arizona law allows taxpayers to receive a tax credit of up to $200 for individual filers and up to $400 for married filers. You can claim the tax credit when filing your 2007 Arizona State Income Tax. The school must receive the funds by December 31, 2007.

Super Kids - Super Sharing

Scottsdale Unified School District has teamed up with the National Football League to make a difference in the lives of children this Super Bowl season. The NFL is joining with the Arizona Cardinals, Super Bowl XLII Host Committee, the NFL Youth Education Town and local schools for a sports equipment and book donation project called Super Kids-Super Sharing.

Students bring their lightly used books and sports equipment to school and place those items in collection boxes. Those donations are then made available to children in need through the NFL Youth Education Town. Five SUSD schools will be among the recipient schools. For more information, please view the posterPDF (Adobe Acrobat).

Open Enrollment Applications for 2008-2009 School Year Are Being Accepted December 3rd-January 14th

Did you know that parents outside of the SUSD boundaries may enroll their child in a Scottsdale Unified School District school? SUSD will begin to accept Open Enrollment applications for 2008-2009 school year during the initial enrollment period of December 3, 2007- January 14, 2008.

Open Enrollment packets will be available at all of our 33 schools and on our Web site at www.susd.org/district/administrativeservices/openenroll.cfm.

Here are just a few reasons why you should consider open enrollment for your children in one of Arizona’s Most Excelling School Districts:

  • Twenty-two “Excelling” schools.
  • More National Merit finalists than any other school district in Arizona.
  • SUSD students score higher than state averages on both AIMS and Terra Nova tests at all grade levels and in all content areas.
  • SAT scores for our college-bound students were above the state and national averages in both English and math.
  • Scottsdale Unified School District offers specialized programs such as:
    • Aviation Science Program at Coronado High School
    • Nursing Program at Saguaro High School
    • Culinary Program at Chaparral High School
    • Award-winning Media Communications Program at Arcadia High School
    • International Baccalaureate Program at Desert Mountain High School
    • Copper Ridge Math and Science Academy for 9th and 10th grade students
    • Foreign Language Immersion Program for first graders at Pueblo Elementary School
    • Seven middle schools with Enrichment Courses that ease the transition from elementary school to middle school and then from middle school to high school
    • Twenty elementary schools that lay a strong educational foundation

Once accepted to an SUSD school through the Open Enrollment process, parents will not need to fill out another application for the remainder of their child’s public school career. Parents will need to provide their child's transportation to and from school. There are a limited number of our schools that are not accepting students through the Open Enrollment process because those schools are at full capacity. Please call the school in which you are interested to check Open Enrollment availability.

Your child’s special place to Excel is waiting in the
Scottsdale Unified School District!

  Excellence in the Classroom
Jordan Greenbaum, a band director at Desert Canyon Middle School, has been appointed as the 7th Grade All-State Band Chairman for the 2007-2008 school year. Mr. Greenbaum is also the North District Honor Band Chairman.
Scottsdale Unified School District's Adapted Physical Education Program received a $2,000 CVS/Pharmacy Community Grant. This grant will provide the opportunity for special needs students in SUSD to attend a horse program at the Phoenix Zoo. One hundred twenty-five students will learn facts about horses as well as ride and groom them through the Hunkapi Horse Program.
The Voices of Saguaro went to Fox 10 TV studios to tape music that will be broadcast on Christmas morning.
Service Learning students at Arcadia, Chaparral, Coronado, Desert Mountain and Saguaro high schools are collecting unwrapped toys for the Christmas Tree Project. The toys will be donated to children of Arizona's military troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and 1,000 family members of public safety officers and firefighters who were injured or died in the line of duty.

Additionally, Service Learning is donating 100 toys from the Service Learning toy drive to the SUSD Adopt a child program.

This year's SUSD Service Learning toy drive reaped 1,905 toys for needy children.

Scottsdale Unified School District high school students currently have art work on exhibit in the "New Horizons" 22nd Annual High School Exhibition at the Shemer Art Museum, 5005 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix 85018.

Forty high schools, including Arcadia, Chaparral, Coronado, Desert Mountain and Saguaro high schools participated in this prestigious and competitive event that is supported by local arts organizations and community members. Kudos to Danielle Harkins, an Arcadia student, who was awarded third place overall and received a cash award. The exhibition runs from November 19-December 17.

Congratulations to Saguaro High School's Erin White, reward recipient for "Judge's Choice" in the Children's Action Alliance (CAA) art competition. The judges loved Erin's work so much they created a category just to acknowledge her fine printmaking on watercolor. Erin's work was exhibited in the APS Corporate Lobby through the month of October.

Children's Action Alliance is a non-profit organization raising funds to promote the well-being of children and families. Students from the valley contributed their artwork for a silent auction and Erin helped raise funds through the sale of her work at the exhibit. Her art teacher, Michelle Peacock says,"Erin always pushes herself to being that much more creative and unique in her self-expression; she exemplifies someone who continually stretches her boundaries."
The students in Mrs. Ricobonno’s class at Desert Canyon Middle School are participating in the NFL Play 60 Program. It is an Arizona Super Bowl XLII Statewide Contest. The program incorporates 60 minutes (30 min. at school and 30 min. at home) of exercise into each day for 60 days. The class has developed a schedule for each day at both locations, and they are tracking their progress. A proposal and documentation had to be submitted to the NFL in December. The class has a chance of being chosen to participate in a Day at the Super Bowl NFL Experience. A special treat for the students will be when former NFL Dallas Cowboy center, Dale Hellestrae, visits their class in person (Mr. Hellestrae is not affiliated with the NFL Play 60 Program).

Navajo Elementary School hosted "Navajo Night" on Thursday. Families were invited to attend "Navajo Night," which focused on reading strategies parents can employ at home to support the educational effort of the school. Students and their parents had the opportunity to hear from children's author Michael Moorehead and also engaged in grade level activities organized by Navajo's teaching staff.
Arcadia High School's Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND) club took part in a national coalition that hosts an annual event at hundreds of schools across the nation called DarfurFast. Students, faculty and the community are encouraged to sacrifice one small item each day (like a cup of coffee) and instead donate the money to Darfur. One dollar will fund the use of a propane kitchen for a refugee, and $3 will fund one person's protection through patrols. Community members and parents can donate online at www.standnow.org/darfurfastglobe icon. All of the donations will go to relief in Darfur.
Desert Mountain High School's band will be performing in two parades in Italy over the winter break, one in Frescati and then the 1st annual parade in Rome on New Year's Day.

The New Year's parade is held in the center of Rome and has stand still performances on the Spanish Steps, passes by the Trevi Fountain and Colleseum and ends at St. Peter's Square.

Two teams from Mohave Middle School competed in the Honeywell Aerospace Challenge. The event took place at Arizona State University’s West Campus in Glendale. This event is designed to enhance students’ knowledge of space and science technology. The team will be flown to the Houston Space Center to experience a behind-the-scenes look at a NASA launch facility and will have a simulated space flight mission for their classroom.
Second graders at Tavan Elementary School hosted the annual Holiday Concert that included Christmas and Hannukah songs and a display of the students that "only want their two front teeth" for the holidays!
Sixth graders at Cheyenne Traditional School hosted Greek Day. This day was dedicated to exploring and learning about ancient Greek civilization, part of the social studies curriculum.
