Laguna is Finalist for Intel's Schools of Distinction Award

Every year, Intel honors U.S. schools that have demonstrated excellence in math and science education as Intel Schools of  Distinction. One elementary, one middle and one high school in each of two categories - math and science - receive $10,000 cash grants and more than $100,000 in products and services from sponsors. Laguna Elementary is one of only three elementary schools chosen as finalists for the Science Excellence Award. On May 19th, the school hosted a visit by members of the selection committee who will announce the winners on June 15th. Desert Mountain Makes List of Top Schools

Desert Mountain High School was named, for the second consecutive year, as one of the top 1300 high schools in the country according to Newsweek's Web site. First Bloom Team Scholarship Winners are Announced

The Bloom Team Scholarship for SUSD students, which focuses on the "Pillars of Character," was developed by Andrew Bloom and David Van Omen of the Bloom Team RE/MAX Excalibur to create awareness of the good deeds and contributions made by our next generation. Congratulations to the first ever recipients:  Aaron Blecker of Sequoya Elementary, Allison Smith of Cheyenne Traditional and Shelly Thomas of Chaparral High School . Each will receive a $500 savings bond to apply towards college tuition. Bloom Team members Bev Goodwin and Rick Bates presented the scholarships.

SUSD Community Schools Pre-K Programs are Growing!

For the 2008-09 school year, new classrooms for three-year-olds will be offered at Copper Ridge, Aztec and Cherokee Elementary Schools . Copper Ridge now has four Pre-K classrooms planned for the fall!

In addition, the Kids Club and Early Birds programs will also enroll three-year-old children next year. The Pre-K and Kids Club programs will partner to provide a familiar and safe environment for the three-year-old students.

Summer School for Pre-K students 3-5 years old is now available at Copper Ridge, Zuni and Anasazi Elementary Schools . Month-long sessions are scheduled for both June and July. The hours are 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. for a 3 day or 5 day program taught by certified Pre-K teachers.

Zuni Elementary School will host both the Pre-K Summer School and the Kids Club Summer Camp for school aged children, so children of all ages can go to a fantastic summer program at the same location! Registration packets for both the next school year and Summer School are available at participating schools and the Community Schools Office.

Excellence in the Classroom
The SEA has given $500 scholarships to three outstanding students who are children of SEA members.

  • Ashley Jordan - Chaparral High School (Jeff & Lori Jordan - Chaparral)
  • Nichole Fermanis - Desert Mountain High School (Marina Rodriguez - Hohokam)

SEA is hopeful that these awards will somehow help make a difference in their college lives. Good luck to all!

This year, over 90,000 students nationwide participated in the National Spanish Exam, which recognizes achievement in the study of the Spanish language, promotes proficiency in interpretive communication in the Spanish language,  assesses the national standards as they pertain to learning Spanish, and stimulates further interest in the teaching and learning of Spanish.

Three Scottsdale Community Collaborative Scholarships are funded through corporate sponsorships that are directed to the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration and the City of Scottsdale's Hispanic Heritage Community Celebration.

The 2008 Scholarship Recipients of $2,500 included Anjelica Montoya of Coronado High School.
