Nurse Honored for Saving a Student's Life

Donna Musser, a nurse at Cherokee Elementary School, was honored Wednesday for her quick reactions for using an Automated External Defibrillator to save a second grade student, who has a heart condition, when he collapsed outside his teacher's door.

She received the first Heart Hero Award from the Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute, the American Heart Association's Heart Saver Award, and accolades from the Rural/Metro Fire Department and Paradise Valley and Scottsdale officials as part of National School Nurse Day.

Dr. Himanshu Shukla and the Cardiac Arrthythmia Institute were honored and thanked for donating Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to all 33 Scottsdale Unified School District schools.

Two Teachers Named Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Nancy Smith, a second grade teacher at Laguna Elementary School, and Jennifer Blalock, a kindergarten teacher at Cochise Elementary School, were nominated by staff, parents and students for the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year award.

The Scottsdale Sam’s Club marketing team, presented Nancy and Jennifer with a $100 gift card, a certificate and shirt. They also presented a check to each school for $1,000.

Nancy has been teaching for 29 years. For 20 years, she has taught Yavapai and Laguna students. Jennifer has been teaching at Cochise since 1993.

Instructional Technology Wins Award

On April 28th, Ariane Cleverly, instructional technology trainer, and the Instructional Technology Team received the Arizona Technology in Education Alliance (AzTEA) Exemplary Web Site Award for Educational Programs/Educational Content. AzTEA is a professional non-profit organization devoted to increasing student achievement through technology in teaching and learning. This award is selected annually from a list of nominees.

One of Ariane's many roles is as Web designer for Scottsdale Unified School District’s Instructional Technology Team. She and the team provide technology training in the integration and implementation of District adopted software and e-Learning programs. The team of 12 is committed to providing leadership for the integration of technology, embedding technology within the curriculum and facilitating the implementation of new technology for the SUSD learning community. With Ariane's expertise, the team has a wealth of tech resources posted on their Web site, including quick tip cards, videos, step-by-step Instructions, Internet resources and weekly tech tips. The site also provides a prominent link to the SUSD Tech Plan, which emphasizes the purpose, focus and future of technology District-wide. Pima Student Takes Reading to the Next Level

Sixth grader Brian Ahern has become the first Pima student to ever reach 1,000 Accelerated Reader points in one school year. This amazing reader has led the way in the quantity of reading done by Pima students over the past two years. The books read by Brian this school year represent more than 6,713,498 words.

The average points per student is about 90 per year. About 190 students per year reach the 200 point mark, 50 students per year reach the 200 points, and about three students per year get to 500 points. Brian is the only student to ever get past 600 points in a single school year!

Zuni Expands Comprehensive Gifted Program

Scottsdale Unified School District's Gifted Services is pleased to announce the addition of a second grade cluster class to the Comprehensive Gifted Program at Zuni Elementary School for the 2007-2008 school year. Beth Parsons, a teacher at Zuni, will be working with other Self Contained Gifted teachers to offer a complete Gifted curriculum designed for students who have extraordinary academic needs, abilities and intellectual potential found in the top three percent of the population. The current program at Zuni includes grades 3, 4 and 5.

Excellence in the Classroom
In honor of National Appreciation week, Tonalea Elementary School's PTO completely redecorated the staff lounge. The PTO provided breakfast, fresh roses and furniture to make staff lounge look like something out of a magazine!


The 10th Annual 102.5 KNIX and Fulton Homes “Teacher of the Week” program sponsored by Fulton Homes and The Dairy Council of Arizona, honors outstanding Valley teachers throughout the school year. Students are encouraged to nominate their favorite teacher by submitting a brief explanation as to why they believe their teacher should be the KNIX and Fulton Homes “Teacher of the Week”. One teacher is selected each week and KNIX’s Morning Show Personality Andrea Veres makes a surprise visit to each winning teacher’s school to present them with a special “Teacher of the Week” prize package that includes $500 in cash plus prizes. This week’s “Teacher of the Week is Mr. Fred Zenner, physical education teacher at Pima Elementary School. Mr. Zenner was nominated by kindergarten student, Amber Tash. Thirty-four winning teachers will be spotlighted on Friday mornings during the Tim & Willy Show on KNIX from September 22, 2006 through May 18, 2007. At the end of the school year, the “Teacher of the Year” will be selected at a special luncheon honoring all of the weekly winners.


Come Read with Me Night at Hohokam Elementary School was a great success as 206 parents and children enjoyed fun reading and writing sessions together. They participated in a book walk, created a bookmark, designed a family journal to record their summer fun, tried a Guess the Character game, visited the computer lab to explore author Web sites and Read to Rocky - a very special dog! The Cat in the Hat visited with everyone and delighted in the celebration of literacy. Parents participated in a book exchange and picked up some helpful resources to support their child's learning. The evening ended with a book bag give away to 80 lucky children!


Fifth graders at Tavan Elementary School are learning about etiquette thanks to the generosity of Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Mrs. Hancock's, Wells Fargo and Shonna James Communications. The etiquette instruction covered the following; why we wash our hands, why good manners are important in society and the special seven - posture, confidence, grammar and proper table etiquette.
Saguaro High School is having its last assembly on Friday, May 18th. Part of the assembly will be recognize faculty and students who raised more than $6,000 for the American Cancer Society. The goal was to raise $5,000. Students raised the money, and two staff members cut-off their hair for “Locks for Love.” One of the staff members, David Fitzpatrick has not cut his hair in 23 years. He is one of our security staff and well-loved by all students! The other individual is the plant manager Joe Arteca. In addition, two teachers raised more than $800.
Laguna Elementary School has been awarded another grant this year. The school will receive a check in the amount of $3,700 from the AZ Character Education Foundation.

Principal Katie Root and her team have been exceptionally perseverant in applying for grants and external funding to provide additional services to the students and families of Laguna. Earlier this year the Laguna team applied for and was awarded a Best Buy Teach Award for $2,500. This will fund purchase of technology to assist their student media program which supports a wide variety of campus activities from academics to health and wellness. Laguna has also submitted another application for an Exxon Mobile grant to help support the Character Counts! Program which is in it’s third year of successful implementation.


Tonalea Elementary School hosted its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 4th. The festivities included dancers, food and fun for all. More than 300 parents, students, staff and guests attended the celebration, including Mayor Mary Manross. The event was coordinated by Lisa Sampson, a parent and volunteer at the school.


The following Health Career students have won scholarships: Rebecca Murphy, a student at Coronado High School, won a Wal-Mart scholarship and a Rotary Scholarship for Career II, Robert Snygg-Carrasco, a student at Saguaro High School, won a Rotary scholarship for Career I and Celine Gabai, a student at Saguaro High School, won the George and Bobbi Kraus Scholarship from the Scottsdale Healthcare Auxiliary. The District's magnet health career program is located at Saguaro High School.
On May 4th, 24 members of the business community visited Laguna Elementary School to share their careers in the math and science field. “We wanted to bring the business world into the school to help the children make meaningful connections between the math and science concepts they are learning and the important career choices it could offer them in the future,” said Dr. Root. Professionals from IBM, Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale Health, US Air, Phelps Dodge, General Dynamics and St. Joseph's Hospital participated in the event. Participants included an airline pilot, chemist, radiologist, pediatrician, accountant, dentist, civil engineer, sales/marketing representative, stock analyst, nurse, hygienist, banker, surgeon, lab assistant and mine inspector.
