It’s working: Enrollment is up!

Efforts to increase enrollment in our schools are working: On Feb. 25, both enrollment and Average Daily Membership (ADM) are up compared with the same date in 2004! Here are the numbers:

  • Enrollment: 26,360, up from 26,317 in 2004.
  • ADM: 25,455, up from 25,441 a year ago. (ADM is the measure used by the state to determine funding to school districts.)

Even more good news: Open enrollment numbers continue to climb! New applications from students who live outside our district, or those who live in the district but attend other schools, total more than 600 students. Those numbers are preliminary until Aug. 22, but the trend is continuing in the right direction.

Start Smart: What is the best way to help my child learn?

Children can fall behind in their academic studies if they are not in school from the very first day each year. Remember to Start Smart and have your child in school on the first day next school year – Aug. 22!

Teacher has second job – as NFL punter

Nick Murphy, a Desert Mountain High School graduate, has returned to his alma mater as a substitute teacher. Many substitute teachers have second jobs and Nick is no different – except that his second job is as a punter with the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL! Nick punted at Scottsdale Community College and Arizona State University. As a pro, Nick has punted with the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL and the Barcelona Dragons and Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe, where he led the league in punting in 2004. At Desert Mountain, Nick lettered twice in football and soccer and four times in track, and earned all-city and all-region honors in soccer.

Excellence in the Classroom

Congratulations to Desert Mountain High School Principal Brian Corte, and teachers Bret Beckle, Math Department and Jeannie Critchfield, Special Education Department, for being nominated for the Who's Who Among America's Teachers. They were selected for this honor because they "made a difference" in the life of one of their former students. The only students invited to submit nominations are those who have distinguished themselves by being recognized for excellence in either Who's Who Among American High School Students, Who's Who Among American High School Students - Sports Edition or The National Dean's List. The most prestigious publications in the nation honoring the best and brightest high school and college students and student athletes.

Lindsey Garrity, a seventh grade student at Mountainside Middle School, was one of 10 winners for the "Symbol of Freedom" contest. She won a trip to Washington, D.C., toured the White House and all of the national monuments, met all of the Suns Players, attended a Phoenix Suns vs. Washington Wizards basketball game and was a guest on "Sun Talk" TV show. Lindsey will be recognized at the March 8 Governing Board meeting.

Students from Cheyenne Traditional School and Ingleside Middle School participated in the Odyssey of the Minds competition on Feb. 26 at Basha High School, Chandler. Odyssey of the Mind provides opportunities for students to develop creative problem solving skills by working in teams. Students learn teamwork, self-respect, the appreciation and understanding of others, and that a group is a more powerful thinking force than an individual. For more information, please visit http://www.azodyssey.org

Arcadia High School's Advanced Choral Ensemble (ACE) won the title of Arizona State Champion for the National Championship of High School A Cappella.
