Workshop Description

The Science of Climate Change - all Educators welcome

Tuition: $20

You many have heard the saying: "Climate is what you expect, weather is what you get." Facing uncertain climate change in the wake of global warming, what can the world expect?  Climate is more than an average temperature; the complex interplay between natural and human-related influences, and their interactions together create our climate.  All life on Earth depends upon certain conditions to survive, making it essential that we understand the basic physical processes controlling our climate system.  In this workshop we will cover the basics of how the climate system works, climate change in geologic time, recorded history, and the more recent past; what we don't know about the climate system.  Participants earn two hours of professional development.  Presented in partnership with the Arizona State Climate Office.

The March 22 workshop is held on the Center's Solar Day Family Event.  Following the workshop, please stay and explore the Center's more than 300 hands-on exhibits and gallery presentations, and visit a variety of exhibitors.

Nov. 10, 2007: 10 a.m. - noon OR

March 22, 2008: 10 a.m. - noon

Down to Earth Astronomy - All educators welcome

Tuition: $20

Take a practical look at astronomy in this hands-on workshop.  You will explore moon journaling and other fun classroom activities.  Learn about the movement and relationship between objects in the solar system, apparent motion of the Sun and stars, the relevance of the tilt of Earth's axis and the formation of the solar system.  Participants receive lesson ideas, activities, materials and two hours of professional development.  This workshop is held during the Center's Astronomy Day Family Event.  Following the workshop, please stay and explore the Center's more than 300 hands-on exhibits and gallery presentations, and visit a variety of exhibitors.

May 17, 2008: 10 a.m. - noon
The Buzz on Alternative Energy - All educators welcom

Tution: $20

Learn what's happening with alternative energy production and use in Arizona.  A panel of local experts will discuss and debate, and answer your questions on wind, solar, biomass and more.  Following the discussion, engage in electrifying, hands-on energy activities!  Participants receive lesson ideas, activities, materials and two hours of professional development.  This workshop is held during the Center's Earth Day Family Event.  Following the workshop, please stay and explore the Center's more than 300 hands-on exhibits and gallery presentations, and visit a variety of exhibitors.
